The leadership of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) has decided to extend support to and obtain the help of the National People’s Power (NPP) to establish power in local authorities in the Nuwara Eliya District, where both parties are unable to take control. 

CWC President, Senthil Thondaman, told Newswire that as such, for local councils where the CWC has secured a majority of seats in the 2025 Local Government Elections and is unable to form the council, it will obtain the support of the NPP to establish power.

He further said that, likewise, in local councils where the NPP has secured a majority of seats and is unable to form the council, it will be supported by the CWC to establish power. (Newswire)

A delegation of politicians representing the Hill Country Tamils of Sri Lanka has requested social and educational assistance from India during a discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Sri Lanka. 

During PM Modi’s official state visit to Sri Lanka from 04-06 April, he engaged in a discussion with a delegation consisting of Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) members, led by TPA Leader MP Mano Ganesan.

Commenting on the meeting, MP Mano Ganesan said PM Modi was informed that they will not burden him with their political demands, but will submit their political proposals when the government commences the new constitutional process.

He further said that they requested Indian logistical support to establish an exclusive Teacher Training College that could produce teachers in the subjects of Science, Maths, English, and IT.

MP Ganesan said a request was also made for the establishment of a Nurses Training Institute for the community girls and the establishment of a Campus affiliated with a prestigious Indian university. 

“On the national economic aspect, we firmly stated that Sri Lanka’s forward march is necessarily tied up with the world’s 5th largest Indian economy. We welcomed the economic connectivities represented by the MoUs signed between Sri Lanka and India,” MP Ganesan said, in a statement. (Newswire)

Former Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman says the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) must ensure Tamil representation in the new Parliament of Sri Lanka from the Colombo District. 

Speaking to Newswire, the former Governor pointed out that despite Tamil representatives being elected in all upcountry plantation districts, the Colombo and Kandy Districts failed to elect Tamil representatives.

Highlighting that the Tamils living in the Colombo District and Western Province require a Tamil representative in Parliament, Senthil Thondaman said Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader Mano Ganesan fits the role.

Senthil Thondaman revealed that Mano Ganesan, who contested under the SJB, has obtained more Tamil votes than any other candidate who contested in the Colombo District. 

As such, he said the SJB must consider providing a National List to a Tamil representative in the new Parliament, with Mano Ganesan the suitable option. 

The former Governor added that although the TPA and CWC may have different political opinions they are of the same policy on increased representation of Tamil MPs in Parliament. (Newswire)
