The impact of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Arnab’ on weather conditions across Sri Lanka is expected to gradually decrease from tomorrow (28), according to the Department of Meteorology.

In its latest weather forecast, the Department said the cyclone was located approximately 800 kilometres northeast of Kankasanthurai at 11.30 a.m. today (27), over the west-central Bay of Bengal.

The system, centred near latitude 16.2°N and longitude 83.7°E, is expected to cross the Indian coast through Andhra Pradesh as a very severe cyclonic storm around 11.30 a.m. tomorrow (28).

Meanwhile, several spells of showers are forecast in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected at a few places in the Uva Province and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 1.00 p.m.

Strong winds of approximately 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

According to the weather forecast for major cities on October 28, Batticaloa is expected to record the highest maximum temperature of 33°C, followed by Anuradhapura, Colombo, Ratnapura and Trincomalee at 31°C.

Nuwara Eliya is forecast to record the lowest minimum temperature of 15°C, with a maximum of 18°C.

The Department of Meteorology has advised the public to take adequate precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
