A special clean-up operation was carried out at the Kandy Lake, following the conclusion of the ‘Siri Dalada Vandanawa’, a special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. 

The clean-up operation was conducted by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy.

During this operation, plastic bottles, packaging materials and other waste that had been discarded into the lake were removed, restoring the Kandy Lake to its natural state. 

The operation was led by Commander Weerasekara and Captain Charitha Gunawantha of the Sri Lanka Navy, with the participation of teams from Clean Sri Lanka, the Department of Irrigation and the Department of Archaeology. The initiative also received strong support from volunteer groups and members of the public. 

According to a statement from the President’s Office, Kandy Lake has long been a major attraction for both local and international tourists visiting Kandy. However, the accumulation of plastic and other waste materials in the lake poses a serious threat to water sources and aquatic life.

Under the Clean Sri Lanka programme, special attention has been given to protecting the environment, with the aim of fostering an environmental, social and moral awakening within the country and thereby uplifting society to a higher level. 

A series of initiatives have been launched to cultivate a sense of civic responsibility among the public and to promote the maintenance of a cleaner, waste-free environment. 

Accordingly, the Clean Sri Lanka programme was actively implemented across the Kandy city area throughout the past ten days, coinciding with the “Siri Dalada Vandanawa”. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Police has informed the public that no new devotees will be admitted to the Siri Dalada Vandanawa in Kandy, for any reason.

With the increase in the number of devotees attending the Siri Dalada Vandanawa, the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pilgrimage Committee yesterday informed the public not to visit Kandy city until further notice.

Stating that it has been decided to provide an opportunity for devotees currently waiting in queues to perform their rituals, the Police said that approximately 400,000 devotees are currently waiting in queues.

The Police further said that it has been estimated that it will be Sunday afternoon (27 April), when the people currently waiting in line will complete the veneration of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. 

As such, the Police have requested that devotees not come to Kandy to attend the Siri Dalada Vandanawa. 

In the event permission is granted to perform the veneration, the Police said an announcement will be made tomorrow (26 Apr) or on Sunday (27 Apr).

President Anura Kumara Disanayake conducted an inspection tour of Kandy city last night to inspect the “Siri Dalada Vandanawa” and identify issues that have emerged. 

According to the President’s Office, the President held an urgent meeting with relevant officials, thereafter, to address issues related to the provision of facilities and sanitation for devotees visiting the “Siri Dalada Vandanawa”. 

Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha, the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Nilanga Dela Bandara, Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, Army Commander Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, Governor of the Central Province Prof. Sarath Abeykoon, Kandy District Secretary Indika Udawatte and several other officials participated in this meeting.

All devotees planning to visit Kandy to venerate the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa have been requested to refrain from entering the city until further notice.

The Kandy Divisional Secretary made the request from devotees due to large crowds arriving for the ‘Siri Dalada Vandanawa’, a special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

The event, being held after 16 years, is underway for the seventh consecutive day today.

The Police yesterday requested devotees to refrain from visiting Kandy today and tomorrow, as over 300,000 devotees were already in queues as of last evening.

The Sri Lanka Police has requested the public to refrain from arriving in Kandy in the next two days, 24 and 25 April, to attend the ‘Siri Dalada Vandanawa’, the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. 

Issuing a statement, the Police said that over 300,000 devotees were already at the location.

The Police said that if the crowd continues to exceed in the next two days, then new devotees will not receive an opportunity to attend the event.

As such, the Police have urged devotees intending to visit on Thursday (24) and Friday (25) to refrain from doing so.
