The High Commission of India in Colombo has invited applications from eligible Sri Lankan students for undergraduate and diploma courses under the Self Financing Scheme for the academic year 2026‑27. 

According to the Indian High Commission, the scheme excludes PIO/OCI card holders and NRIs.

Courses available include MBBS, BDS, BE, B.Tech, B.Pharm, B.Arch, as well as diploma‑level technical and pharmacy programs.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

• MBBS/BDS: Minimum 50th percentile in NEET and 50% each in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English at A/L.
• BE/B.Tech and Diploma in Engineering: At least 60% each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and 50% in English at A/L.
• B.Pharmacy and Diploma in Pharmacy: Minimum 60% each in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and 50% in English at A/L.
• B.Arch: Mandatory clearance of the aptitude test prescribed by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi.

Application forms can be obtained from the Education Wing of the High Commission of India, Colombo on working days between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, upon production of G.C.E. O/L and A/L certificates along with the Birth Certificate.

A protest will be held in Colombo on Thursday (24 Apr), organized by the Allied Health Sciences graduates and the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), demanding the abolition of unregulated institutions offering health-related degrees.

The organizers claim these so-called “degree shops” are putting lives at risk and harming the quality of the country’s healthcare system by producing unqualified graduates. 

They further said that such institutions undermine the credibility of degrees awarded by state universities.

The protest aims to urge authorities to take strict action against unregulated private degree programs in the health sector. 

Students and recent graduates from across the country are expected to take part in the demonstration. (Newswire)

At least 70 students of the first batch of the Faculty of Medicine at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka are facing uncertainty over the qualification status of their degree. 

Issuing a statement, the students pointed out that despite being a state university that opened in 2019, the MBBS degree offered by this institution is currently not recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

They revealed that this situation at this government-funded university has resulted in creating uncertainty over their future to work as doctors in Sri Lanka. 

“We are the final year medical students of this government-funded university which was opened in 2019. But we were recently informed by the SLMC that, although we are a state university, the MBBS degree offered by our university cannot be accepted by the SLMC and hence as of now our MBBS degree is not valid and recognized in our country to work as doctors in the future,” they said.

The students point out that this problem has arisen due to the irresponsible actions of the university administration, and the relevant stakeholders of the government, including the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education. 

“We have only another 10 months for our final MBBS examination in October 2024 and if we are not given a proper solution to start our final year clinical training, we will fail to sit for this exam,” they revealed. 

A silent protest was held earlier this week by the first batch of medical students from the Faculty of Medicine at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, demanding a solution to the issue, including a proper Final-Year-Clinical-Training program and a Professorial Unit. (NewsWire)
