The Government Dental Surgeons’ Association today issued a statement clarifying its stance on the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment and the Cabinet decision to separate specialist medical and dental services.

The Association stated that recent media reports attributing views on the 22nd Amendment to its members were inaccurate. 

It noted that neither the Executive Committee nor the Central Working Committee had discussed the amendment, nor had any official statement been released. Officials requested media institutions to correct such reports.

Explaining its participation in a Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) discussion on the amendment, the Association said attendance was part of its long‑standing tradition of joining awareness sessions organized by professional unions, and should not be interpreted as the Association taking a position on the matter. It further stated that constitutional amendments are primarily legal and judicial issues, falling outside its subject scope.

Marking the centenary of the Government Dental Service, the Association highlighted its current priority: addressing the Cabinet decision to establish specialist medical and dental services separately from the existing medical service. 

It reiterated its opposition to the move, stressing that such separation without proper study and broad consultation would not resolve existing issues faced by specialist doctors and dental surgeons. Instead, it warned, the decision could undermine professional unity, disrupt career progression, and create complications in recruitment and promotion processes.

The Association cautioned that sudden implementation of major structural changes without adequate study could lead to serious problems in the future. It urged the President and the Government to consult all relevant professional associations and conduct proper study before implementing the Cabinet decision.
