Cabinet approval has been granted to increase the deposits placed by candidates for the Presidential Election.

Accordingly, the deposit placed by a candidate representing a recognised political party has been increased to Rs. 2.6 million.

The deposit placed by a candidate representing an independent party has been increased to Rs. 3.1 million.

The proposal to amend the necessary regulations was presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe together with Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. (Newswire)
