The opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has established power in the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha. 

SJB candidate Indika Prasad Ranasinghe was elected Chairman of the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha in the election held during the inaugural session of the local council today.

Two youths who had abducted an 18-year-old girl from her house have been remanded until 20 January by the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court.

It is reported that the girl was involved in a romantic relationship with one youth living in the same area, and he had abducted her after her family had opposed the relationship.

The suspect had entered the girl’s house and had threatened her mother and grandmother with a firearm, after which he had kidnapped her. 

Following investigations conducted by the Deraniyagala Police, two youths were arrested over the abduction, while the weapon used in the incident was also taken into Police custody.

The abducted girl had been admitted to the Avissawella Base Hospital for a medical examination. (Newswire)
