A tense situation was reported during the Devinuwara Esala Perahera procession after an elephant suddenly went on rampage.

Video footage of the incident shows the elephant suddenly attacking its mahout, before walking away.

The elephant remains aggressive with other mahouts attempting to control the animal and contain the situation. 

The public seated on pavements to view the perahera were seen panicking and scrambling away to safety. (Newswire)

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting incident near the Devinuwara Dewalaya in Gandara on 21 March, in which two men, aged 28 and 29, were killed.

According to the Police, the suspects had been arrested after surrendering to the Gandara Police via their lawyers yesterday. 

The arrested suspects are aged 26 and 35 years, and are residents of Gandara and Devinuwara. 

They were arrested in connection with the murders of two men, aged 28 and 29, near the Devinuwara Dewalaya in Gandara. The victims were travelling on a motorbike when they were pursued by unidentified individuals in a van. 

The assailants reportedly collided with the motorbike, shot the victims, and fled the scene, after which they set fire to the van some distance away before escaping. (Newswire)

A 34-year-old suspect has been arrested for aiding the recent shooting incident near the Devinuwara Dewalaya in Gandara, in which two men, aged 28 and 29, were killed.

According to the Police, the suspect has been arrested for aiding the chief suspects to set fire to the van that was used to carry out the shooting. 

The suspect was arrested on Sunday in the Gandara Police Division by officials from the Matara Division Crimes Investigation Unit.

A dry fish businessman has been targeted in a shooting reported in the Thalpava area in Devinuwara yesterday. 

CCTV footage of the incident shows two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle chasing behind and opening fire at a man who had opened the gate of his residence.

The main shooter is then seen collecting all the empty bullets and fleeing the scene on the motorcycle.

It is reported that no person was killed or injured in the shooting that had occurred last evening (12 Jan).

The Police state the motorcycle used for the shooting has been identified, while the Gandara Police is conducting investigations. (Newswire)
