Sri Lanka Police says a complaint has been received with regard to a video circulating on social media showing a dog being subjected to distress after hot water was thrown at it.

According to the Police, a complaint had been filed with the Bagawanthalawa Police Station.

The incident is reported to have taken place in the Bridgewell Watta area in Bagawanthalawa on Monday evening (15). 

Per the complaint, the dog’s owner has alleged that a neighbour had thrown hot water at the animal.

Although the distressed dog has not yet been located, the Bagawanthalawa Police have launched an investigation and begun recording statements related to the incident. (Newswire)

A 48-year-old woman from Mankulam in the Northern Province has been arrested in connection to hanging a dog to death.

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that she was arrested in connection to the incident, of which a photograph had gained attention on social media recently.

He further said that the dog had been hanged to death by being tied to a tree by the neck using a rope, on Saturday (Jan 25).

Investigations conducted by the Mankulam Police had led to the arrest of a 48-year-old woman today. 

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said she has been arrested under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, No. 13 of 1907, and will be produced in court.

According to media reports, a mediation board in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu District, had issued a verdict to hang the dog as it had bitten a goat, to resolve a conflict between two groups of people. (Newswire)
