The government has decided to cancel, with immediate effect, the procurement process related to the controversial electronic passport (e-passport) project, according to Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP
Ajith P. Perera.

Speaking to media Perera said that the decision has been communicated to the relevant bidders via email on May 29, 2026, by the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration.

According to Perera, the email informed bidders that the Cabinet of Ministers had directed the immediate cancellation of the procurement process for the project. (Newswire)

The National Procurement Commission of Sri Lanka is investigating the procedure followed by the former government related to the tender awarded for the procurement of electronic passports.

The Court of Appeal was informed in this regard by Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena, representing the Attorney General.

The Additional Solicitor General further informed the court that the National Procurement Commission has sought a week to present its observations related to its investigation.

The details were conveyed when the petition filed by Epic Lanka Private Limited challenging the former government’s decision to procure 750,000 regular passports and 5 million e-passports from two foreign companies was taken up for hearing yesterday (02 Dec). 

Taking into consideration the facts presented during the hearing, the Court of Appeal fixed the case for January 23, 2025. (Newswire)

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced a new methodology to apply for passports, for the convenience of the public. 

Issuing a notice, the Immigration Department said the new system to apply for passports was implemented with effect from today (July 17).

Those applying for passports have been requested to make prior registration via the link https://www.immigration.gov.lk 

The Immigration Department said after registration the opportunity to obtain passports will be received on a priority basis, while it is available for both normal and one-day services.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has taken several measures in view of the e-passport system which is to come into effect in November this year.

Immigration and Emigration Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya said, therefore, the validity period of passports expiring after 01 July has been extended by a year. 

He further said specifically, that if a passport’s 10-year validity period has expired, an additional one-year grace period will be granted until the e-passport is issued.

Stating that e-passports are scheduled to be issued starting in November, he urged passport holders to obtain their e-passports promptly. (Newswire)
