Several persons have been reported missing following an earthslip in Polpitiya, Hatton today (03).

Police said a mound of earth collapsed onto a house, trapping several individuals.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway, according to Police. (Newswire)

Vehicular movement has been disrupted in the Viharagala area along the Wellawaya- Beragala Road due to an earthslip. 

According to the Disaster Management Centre, the road has been completely blocked due to the earthslip.

The DMC further said that measures are being taken to clear the road.

Motorists have been urged to use the Ella- Wellawaya Road as an alternative route. (Newswire)

An earthslip on the Ella-Wellawaya main road near the 12th-kilometre post has disrupted vehicular movements.

A 16-year-old schoolboy has died after being trapped under an earth embankment that had collapsed due to heavy rains in the Gallewatte area in Medamahanuwara in the Teldeniya Police Division.

The Police told Newswire that the earth embankment had collapsed around 04.30 am today trapping the sleeping teenager between a wall of the house and soil.

Despite having been rescued and admitted to the Medamahanuwara Hospital, the boy had died while receiving treatment. 

A 61-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy who had also sustained injuries in the incident are undergoing treatment. (Newswire)
