The Government has launched a new official website to provide accurate information and address public inquiries regarding Sri Lanka’s proposed education reforms.

The Reform Information & Enquiry Service (RIES) website, https://edureformfact.moe.gov.lk, was officially launched with the participation of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya.

The launch took place during a programme held at Temple Trees yesterday (14), attended by heads of electronic and print media institutions to discuss the implementation of the new education reforms.

The website has been developed to communicate accurate information about the reforms and allow members of the public to submit questions regarding the proposed changes to the education system.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasised that the reforms represent a transformation of the entire education system rather than merely a revision of the school curriculum.

“This is a transformation of the entire education system that goes beyond a change in the curriculum. The future of our country is built on quality education,” she stated.

The Prime Minister noted that the first phase of the reforms commenced with Grade 1 in 2026, while plans are underway to introduce the reforms to Grade 6 in 2027.

She said teacher training, infrastructure development and digitalisation initiatives are already being implemented to ensure the education system is prepared for the changes.

Highlighting the role of the media, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of creating a national dialogue on education reforms and ensuring that accurate information reaches the public.

“We may have different political ideologies, but it is important that we do not use children’s education as a political battleground,” she said.

Meanwhile, Professor Prabhath Jayasinghe, Co-Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Public Awareness of Education Reforms, explained that the proposed changes aim to move away from teacher-centred, memorisation-based education towards student-centred learning connected to real-world experiences.

He said the reforms would also introduce continuous assessment methods to evaluate students’ analytical, creative and problem-solving abilities, rather than relying primarily on final examinations.

The programme concluded with a discussion among media representatives, senior journalists and education experts on the proposed changes to Sri Lanka’s education system. (Newswire)
