A suspect linked to multiple crimes and identified as a close associate of an organized criminal has escaped police custody in Elpitiya after attacking an officer with a sharp weapon during a raid in the Kahaduwa area.

The Police said a team from the Elpitiya Police Station had gone to the location last night (30) to apprehend suspects when they attempted to assault officers, prompting police to fire shots into the air. Two suspects fled, with officers pursuing them.

During the attempted arrest, one suspect struck a police officer with a sharp weapon. Police then opened fire, injuring the suspect in the hand. 

He was handcuffed and taken into custody, but another group later arrived and forcibly took him away.

The suspect remains at large, while the injured police officer is receiving treatment at Elpitiya Hospital.

The Police stated that the suspect is wanted in connection with several serious offenses and investigations are underway to re‑arrest him. (Newswire)

A school student was reported dead after falling off a greased tree during Avurudu celebrations held in the Elpitiya area.

The unfortunate incident had occurred during the New Year celebrations organised at a playground near the Amugoda Sri Vijayarama Temple in Pitigala today. 

According to the Pitigala Police, the child had fallen off a 40-foot greased tree while preparing it for the event and had died upon admission to the Elpitiya Base Hospital.

The deceased is a 16-year-old boy who was awaiting the results of the GCE Ordinary Level Examinations. 

The postmortem examination will be conducted at the Elpitiya Base Hospital, while the Pitigala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)

A 06-year-old child was reported dead in an accident involving a three-wheeler and a van in the Kurundugaha town in Elpitiya early this morning.

The Police said a three-wheeler travelling from Ambalangoda to Elpitiya had collided head-on with a van travelling in the opposite direction.

The three-wheeler driver, a male passenger, two female passengers, and three female children who had been travelling in the three-wheeler had been injured in the accident.

The group had been admitted to the Elpitiya Hospital, during which one female child had succumbed to injuries, while the others were continuing to be treated in the hospital. 

The deceased 06-year-old girl is a resident of Pitigala. 

The driver of the van has been arrested in connection with the accident. The Elpitiya Police is conducting investigations. (Newswire)

Postal voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the 2024 Local Government Election commenced today.

The National Election Commission announced that those unable to cast their postal votes will be allowed to do so on October 18 at the District Election Commission located in the district of their workplace. 

The distribution of ballot papers for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election is scheduled to be distributed from 17-20 October.

The National Election Commission has officially announced details regarding the election of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha.

As per the schedule, deposits will be accepted from candidates from 26 August to 11 September 2024.

The Election Commission states election nominations will be called from 09-12 September. 

The relevant nominations will be accepted at the Galle District Secretariat as published by the Returning Officer-in-charge of Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha.

The term of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha, effective from November 2019, ended on 06 March 2024, after the budget was defeated for the fourth consecutive time.

Since the budget was defeated for the fourth time, as per the Local Council Act, a Special Commissioner took over.

Officials from the Elpitiya Special Crimes Investigation Division have taken custody of a vehicle that had been parked at the car park of the arrival terminal of the Katunayake Airport.

It is reported that the motorcar, a Nissan Bluebird, has been parked at the location since May 29, 2024.

Investigations have found that the vehicle belongs to a resident of Ambalangoda and is a wanted vehicle related to an ongoing case at the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court. 

Following a court order, Officials from the Elpitiya Special Crimes Investigation Division took custody of the vehicle this afternoon.

A 51-year-old Public Health Inspector (PHI) is reported dead after being shot dead at his residence at Pathiraja Mawatha in Elpitiya.

According to the Police, two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle carried out the shooting around 07.00 am today and have fled the area.

A woman and her son have sustained serious injuries after being stabbed with a knife in the Anuruddhagama area in Elpitiya this morning over a neighbourhood dispute, it was reported.

The victims have been identified as a 55-year-old woman and her 25-year-old son, both residents of the said area.

The injured duo had initially been admitted to the Elpitiya Hospital, after which they had been transferred to the Karapitiya Hospital and are reportedly in critical condition.
