Clean Serendib marked the official commencement of its beach-cleaning operations with a demonstration of specialized machine-assisted cleaning technology at Mount Lavinia Beach on 14 October 2026. The initiative introduces a complementary approach to coastal conservation in Sri Lanka, focusing on the removal of smaller waste materials that are often difficult to recover through conventional manual cleaning methods.

The demonstration showcased how mechanized cleaning can enhance existing beach conservation efforts by addressing waste particles embedded within the sand. The event provided invited stakeholders with an opportunity to observe the technology in operation and understand its potential contribution to improving the cleanliness of Sri Lanka’s coastal environments.

Established under the leadership of Founder and Chief Executive Officer Aravinda Athukorala, Clean Serendib is dedicated to advancing practical solutions for coastal cleanliness and environmental preservation. The organization seeks to complement the work of volunteer groups, environmental organizations and public institutions by introducing specialized equipment capable of addressing persistent challenges in beach waste removal.

While conventional beach-cleaning activities play an important role in collecting visible litter, smaller discarded materials, including plastic fragments, bottle caps and other debris, frequently remain embedded beneath the sand. Recovering these materials manually can be labor-intensive, highlighting the value of mechanical cleaning technologies as a complementary solution.

The equipment deployed by Clean Serendib operates through a mechanical screening process designed to separate waste from beach sand. As the machine moves across the beach, it lifts approximately one to two inches of sand and passes the material through an integrated sieve. Sand is returned to the beach while waste particles larger than the sieve openings are separated and retained in an onboard collection compartment for subsequent removal.

Commenting on the initiative, Aravinda, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Clean Serendib, stated:

“Sri Lanka’s beaches are among our most valuable natural assets, and protecting them requires consistent effort and practical solutions. Volunteer groups and environmental organizations already make an invaluable contribution to keeping our coastlines clean. Our objective is to build on those efforts by introducing technology that addresses the smaller waste materials that conventional cleaning methods struggle to remove. We believe machine-assisted cleaning can make a meaningful contribution to coastal conservation, and our ambition is to establish a sustained program that helps preserve these environments for future generations.”

Mount Lavinia Beach was selected as the starting point for the initiative due to its prominence as one of Colombo’s most frequented coastal destinations. Preliminary cleaning trials conducted ahead of the official demonstration provided an opportunity to assess the machinery’s operation under local beach conditions.

Building on the inaugural demonstration, Clean Serendib intends to establish sustained cleaning operations while evaluating opportunities to progressively extend its activities to other coastal locations. The organization will assess operational capacity, equipment requirements and beach-specific conditions to determine how its cleaning model can be deployed effectively across prioritized locations.

Clean Serendib will also explore opportunities to collaborate with coastal establishments and other stakeholders whose interests align with maintaining clean and accessible beaches, supporting the long-term continuity of its operations.

Through the integration of specialized technology, operational partnerships and a sustained commitment to environmental stewardship, Clean Serendib aims to contribute to cleaner beaches and strengthen ongoing efforts to protect Sri Lanka’s coastline.
