All businesses in Eravur, Batticaloa, remained closed today in remembrance of the 121 Muslims who were brutally massacred in Eravur by members of the LTTE.

Marking the 35th anniversary of the mass killing of Muslim civilians in Eravur, religious observances were held today, 12 August 2025.

The main street of Eravur declared a day of mourning, with all commercial establishments shut down in solemn tribute.

Under the leadership of M.L. Abdul Latheef, President of the Eravur Suhadaq Association, a memorial event was held at the Noorus-Salaam Central Cemetery Mosque. 

Relatives of the victims, religious scholars, students, police officers, and political dignitaries were among those in attendance.

The Eravur Municipal Council and the Traders’ Association jointly submitted a petition to the government, handed over to Eravur Divisional Secretary S.H. Musammil.

According to the event organizers, 121 Muslim civilians were massacred in their sleep in their homes in the Eravur area by members of the LTTE on the night of 12 August 1990.

The petition calls for an independent investigation into the killings and demands justice for the victims. (Newswire)

Batticaloa District MP Ali Zahir Moulana has called for better sports facilities for outstation schools, stating there is plenty of promise outside of Colombo.

MP Moulana’s comment comes after Alighar Central College of Eravur emerged as the National Champions in the ‘Ball Blaster Challenge Trophy 2023’, a 1st XI Division Schools Football tournament.

Sharing snippets on the victory of his alma mater on ‘X’, MP Moulana said it was a very proud day for Eravur and Batticaloa.

“An unimaginable feat for a small-town school with minimal facilities and infrastructure to defeat top urban schools with the best facilities at their disposal,” MP Moulana said, sharing a photo of the team’s practice ground.

Stating that this game goes to show that there is plenty of promise outside of Colombo, MP Moulana said, “We only have to invest into and create the enabling environment and leave the rest up to them.”
