The inaugural meeting of the Cabinet Committee appointed to ensure the systematic functioning of the public service has held discussions on maintaining the uninterrupted operation of the public service while effectively managing energy resources, in light of the challenges that have arisen due to the prevailing conflict situation in the Middle East. 

According to the President’s Office, the first meeting of the Cabinet Committee was held on Thursday (19) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. 

During the discussion, the Committee also focused on ensuring the continued provision of essential government services without disruption. 

In addition, detailed deliberations were conducted on measures to sustain uninterrupted service delivery to the public and to mitigate the difficulties faced by public sector employees under the current circumstances.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed officials to develop a formal program aimed at maintaining essential services and public services seamlessly during the upcoming April New Year season. 

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), this initiative is intended to guarantee the smooth operation of essential services without any disruptions during the festive season.

In addition, the President has emphasized that institutions that fall under essential categories such as the Presidential Secretariat, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Ministries of Defence, Health, Transport, and Power and Energy must collaborate to prepare this program jointly.

Furthermore, for the upcoming New Year season, the President has directed the security forces to execute a comprehensive program to ensure public security and the maintenance of law and order across the country. (NewsWire)

A Gazette notification has been issued declaring two key sectors as essential services in Sri Lanka. 

As per the Gazette, all services connected to the supply of electricity and the supply or distribution of petroleum products and fuel have been declared as essential public services.

A Gazette notification has been issued declaring electricity and petroleum services as essential services in Sri Lanka. 

The Gazette has been issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe dated December 18, 2023.

“The services provided by any Public Corporation or Government Department or Local Authority or Co-operative Society or any branch thereof being a Department or Corporation or Local Authority or Co-operative Society, which is engaged in the provision of the services connected to the supply of electricity and the supply or distribution of petroleum products and fuel is essential to the life of the community and is likely to be impeded or interrupted, declare the services specified to be an Essential Public Service,” the Gazette states.

The government has issued a Gazette notification declaring three key sectors as essential services. 

The Gazette issued by the Secretary to the President is effective from Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

As per the Gazette, electricity, petroleum, and health services have been declared as essential services. 

The Gazette states, “All services connected to the supply of electricity, the supply or distribution of petroleum products and fuel, and all service, work or labour, of any description whatsoever, necessary or required to be done in connection with the maintenance, and the reception, care feeding, and treatment, of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, dispensaries, and other similar institutions are declared an essential public service.”
