Sri Lanka’s Department of Examinations says all arrangements are in place to conduct the 2026 national examinations according to the previously announced schedule, dismissing concerns over possible changes.

Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Kumari Liyanage  said the 2026 examination timetable was announced on September 14, 2025, after considering the number of school days available for students’ studies.

According to the schedule, the 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination will be held from August 10 to September 5. Applications for the examination were called from March 24 to April 24, while admission cards are scheduled to be issued in July.

The Grade 5 Scholarship Examination is set to be held on August 9. Applications were accepted from March 30 to April 30.

Meanwhile, the General Information Technology (GIT) Examination for Grade 12 students is scheduled for October 24. Applications for the examination opened on June 22 and will close on July 16.

The 2026 G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination is planned to be held from December 8 to December 17, with applications expected to be called in early July.

The Examinations Commissioner said marking activities for the Advanced Level and Scholarship examinations have already been planned, with evaluation work expected to begin soon after the respective examinations conclude. Scholarship examination results are expected to be released before the 2026 Advanced Level results.

She also announced a change to the practical examinations conducted for certain Ordinary Level subjects. Unlike previous years, practical tests will be held before the written examination instead of after it.

The decision was taken due to a high number of students failing to attend practical examinations after completing the written papers, which negatively affects their final results. Schools have already been informed of the new arrangement.

Meanwhile, following the release of the 2025 Ordinary Level examination results on June 19, applications for re-scrutiny of results will be accepted from July 25.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has raised concerns about the obstacles faced by students when taking exams in unfamiliar environments. 

In a recent discussion, the President emphasized the need for the Ministry of Education and the Examinations Department to prioritize the convenience and progress of students over their own convenience. 

Recognizing the difficulties faced by students, the President advised the education authorities to transform schools with a minimum of 75 qualified students into examination centres, provided that it doesn’t disrupt ongoing exam activities. 

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), he instructed officials to take prompt action in implementing this plan. 

During the discussion, it was revealed that the 2022 (2023) GCE Ordinary Level examination, which began today (29), would be conducted in 3,568 centres, accommodating a total of 472,553 students. The government has employed approximately 40,000 officials for the smooth execution of the exams. 

However, President Wickremesinghe received reports from concerned parents and students regarding the inconvenience caused by redirecting students from their own schools to other examination centres. The Ministry of Education and the Department of Examinations explained that they had made this decision due to the prevailing economic situation, aiming to limit the number of examination centres. 

Understanding the impact this has on students’ mental well-being, the President stressed the importance of informing schools and students about such changes at least one year in advance. He also emphasized the necessity of establishing a formal program to conduct all examinations related to children’s education without any delay. 

The President clarified that it is not the responsibility of the Examinations Department to provide reasons for not holding exams but rather the primary duty of the Ministry of Education and the Examination Department to create a conducive environment for students to take exams in familiar surroundings.

The Court of Appeal has refused a petition filed by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) pertaining to the supply of uninterrupted electricity.

The petition had been filed by the PUCSL requesting the court to issue a writ order to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to provide an uninterrupted power supply during the ongoing GCE Advanced Level examinations.

However, the Court of Appeal refused the petition filed by the PUCSL without consideration, when it was called up for hearing today (10). 

The PUCSL has been urging the CEB to provide an uninterrupted power supply until the conclusion of the examinations on 17th February 2023.

An agreement had also been reached during a discussion with several stakeholders of the power industry including the PUCSL and CEB at the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka to provide an uninterrupted power supply.

The CEB, however, continued with its daily scheduled power cuts a few days later claiming it was unable to provide an uninterrupted power supply under the current circumstances. (NewsWire)
