The “Memories of a People’s Struggle” exhibition, organized to preserve the true events, memories, and core values of the 2022 Aragalaya at the Galle Face Green, will be held in Colombo in May.

According to the organizers, the exhibition will be held on May 9 and 10, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm at the JDA Perera Gallery in Colombo 07.

‘Feminist Futures’ interrogates systemic violence, gender inequality, and cultural taboos, while also celebrating the resilience, autonomy, and solidarity of women.

The Godawaya Shipwreck Exhibition at the BMICH in Colombo was inaugurated today by US Ambassador Julie Chung and Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs, Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, together with the Central Cultural Fund’s Maritime Archaeology Unit (MAU).  

According to the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, the event marked the culmination of the multi-year Godawaya Shipwreck Project, funded through the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), a US–Sri Lanka partnership to preserve the oldest known wooden shipwreck in the Asia-Pacific region, dating back over 2,100 years. 

By documenting and conserving artifacts from this ancient trading vessel, the initiative demonstrates how the two countries are working together to safeguard heritage, strengthen Indo-Pacific ties, and build a foundation for shared security and open commerce.  

Ambassador Chung underscored the project’s significance, stating: “Maritime heritage is a story of connection — and today’s U.S.–Sri Lanka partnership continues that legacy. From ports to people, we are Indo-Pacific partners working together to safeguard security, ensure open commerce, and protect the futures of our nations. The Godawaya shipwreck is a reminder that secure sea lanes have powered prosperity for centuries and remain vital to both American and Sri Lankan interests today.” 

The exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on 04th and 5th September. Visitors can explore artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, including pottery, grinding stones, glass and metal ingots, and carnelian beads. These discoveries not only reveal the vessel’s role as a trading ship but also underscore Sri Lanka’s historic position as a hub of Indian Ocean trade and cultural exchange — and the continuing importance of maritime security to regional prosperity.

The Godawaya Shipwreck Preservation Project, initiated in 2022, has achieved remarkable milestones in maritime archaeology. Through AFCP funding, the MAU has safeguarded nearly 200 artifacts unearthed from the wreck, employed advanced 3D modeling techniques for site surveying, and developed a comprehensive 3D model of the shipwreck site. These efforts have revolutionized maritime archaeology in Sri Lanka and set a global standard for underwater cultural heritage preservation. The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Central Cultural Fund’s Maritime Archaeology Unit will host an exhibition and symposium in September, highlighting the documentation and preservation of artifacts from the Godawaya Shipwreck, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant maritime heritage sites. 

According to the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, the exhibition and symposium will be held from 03-05 September at the BMICH Cinema Lounge in Colombo. The exhibition at BMICH will open to the public at 11:00 a.m. on September 3 and will then be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 4 and 5.

The exhibition is also a reminder of the Indo-Pacific’s vital role in maintaining peace and security, while safeguarding sovereign rights, a shared interest for both the United States and Sri Lanka.

Discovered off the coast of the fishing village of Godawaya in southern Sri Lanka, the Godawaya Ancient Shipwreck is the oldest known wooden shipwreck in the Asia-Pacific region, dating back more than 2,100 years to the 1st or 2nd century BCE. This extraordinary underwater archaeological site provides rare insights into early Indian Ocean trade and seafaring.

The project is funded through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), a U.S. Government initiative that supports projects worldwide to safeguard cultural heritage, from historic sites and artifacts to traditional art forms. Through AFCP, experts have recovered and documented remarkable artifacts at Godawaya, including clay pottery, grinding stones, glass and metal ingots, and carnelian beads, shedding light on Sri Lanka’s ancient role in regional trade and cultural exchange. The Sri Lanka Mission in New York hosted the “Sri Lanka in Focus 2024” photographic exhibition in association with the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society of Los Angeles and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). 

According to the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, the New York-based diplomatic corps was welcomed to the opening of the “Sri Lanka in Focus” 2024 photographic exhibition on 25 April 2024. 

This event, open to the public last week (Apr 26), showcased over 80 images capturing the natural beauty, wildlife, and rich heritage of Sri Lanka.  

The President of the General Assembly Ambassador Dennis Francis, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Mohan Pieris declared the Exhibition open at a ceremony and remarked on the significance of this photographic exhibition, which offers a glimpse of the rich biodiversity of fauna and flora offered in Sri Lanka, with eight UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) will conduct the ‘Air Tattoo’ Educational and Technical Exhibition 2024 in Jaffna this week, in commemoration of the SLAF’s 73rd anniversary commemorated this year. 

According to the SLFA, the ‘Air Tattoo’ exhibition will be held at the Mutraweli Grounds in Jaffna from today (Mar 06) until March 10, 2024. 

Several stalls representing state and private universities, schools, businesses, and Information Technology companies, will be set up at the exhibition. 

Apart from the trade fairs, the SLAF has also organized musical events every evening for the entertainment of the crowds visiting the exhibition.

The ‘Sri Lanka RAK -2024’ exhibition has been organized to be held in the United Arab Emirates from 16-20 April this year.

According to the Government Information Department, the exhibition has been organized by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) together with the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RAK CCI).

Sri Lankan organizations that provide international standard Sri Lankan goods and Services will be allowed to set up stalls at the UAE’s Expo Centre for the exhibition.

A total of 240 stalls will be provided for Sri Lankan organizations involved in various sectors, including distribution and investments. 

Sri Lankan business organizations looking to participate in the five-day exhibition are requested to reserve a stall on or before February 28, 2024.

An exhibition of Sri Lanka trade, investment opportunities and culture will be held in Baoji City in Xian Province in China in March 2024. 

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, more than 40 Sri Lankan stalls will be set up to display Sri Lankan products with the participation of more than 100 entrepreneurs and traders.

A team of Chinese and Sri Lankan organizers of this exhibition called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees this week (Jan 23) to brief him on the proposed Sri Lankan exposition in Xinjiang.

The first ever single country exhibition on Sri Lanka in Brazil was held under the theme ‘Explore Sri Lanka 2024’ on 12 and 13 January 2024 at the Espaço Cultural Renato Russo (Cultural Center) in Brasilia to promote history, heritage, culture, trade, tourism, cuisine and products of Sri Lanka. 

According to the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brazil, the exhibition was organized by the Embassy in collaboration with the Secretariat for International Relations of the Federal District Government of Brazil. 

The opening ceremony was held on Friday, 12 January 2024 with the participation of senior officials of the government of Brazil, diplomats, business leaders, tour operators and journalists.

In his remarks at the opening of the exhibition, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil  Sumith Dassanayake highlighted the tourist attractions, the diversity of the tourism industry in Sri Lanka and the opportunities available for investments in diverse sectors.
