An individual who had obtained nude video content from young women by pretending to be Sri Lankan film director and screenwriter Somaratne Dissanayake has been arrested in Polgahawela. 

The suspect was identified following investigations into a complaint filed with the Cybercrimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by Somaratne Dissanayake.

Police investigations found that the individual had created a fake Facebook account using Somaratne Dissanayake’s name, had contacted young women promising them acting roles, and had obtained their nude photos and videos. 

Further investigations found that the 26-year-old man from Polgahawela had engaged in this false act since 2023, and had obtained explicit photographs and videos from nearly 20 women aged between 20 and 35 years.

The suspect was arrested in Polgahawela, while the Police have recorded statements from 06 affected women.

During interrogations, he revealed that he had contacted the women through the fake Facebook account and had shared a WhatsApp number to which he had obtained the explicit videos and photographs. (Newswire)

An individual who had pleaded guilty for spreading false and explicit rumours about women via a YouTube Channel has been sentenced to 06 months of imprisonment, suspended for five years.

The verdict was issued by the Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali when the Kaduwela resident was produced in court yesterday (31).

The suspect was sentenced when the case filed against him by the Cybercrimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was taken up before the court.

The CID had filed the case after conducting investigations into a complaint filed by a teacher from Colombo. 

In her complaint, the teacher had informed that her photo was being used to spread false information on YouTube.

The CID had filed a case under three charges against the suspect. (Newswire)

Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera has ordered the Police Children & Women Bureau to launch investigations into the possession and sharing on the internet of explicit videos and pictures of underaged Sri Lankan children.

It is reported that the Court order was issued yesterday after the Magistrate had considered facts presented by the Police Children & Women Bureau claiming that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the US had informed Sri Lankan authorities in this regard. 

The court was informed that the NCMEC was an organization with members from 08 countries and has software that can detect explicit videos and pictures of underaged children of its member states being shared on the internet. 

The Police Children & Women Bureau informed the court that it has received information on several parties in Sri Lanka looking to share such distorted and explicit videos and pictures on the internet. 

Stating that the Police Children & Women Bureau has also received several complaints in this regard, the institution told the court that, however, they have been unable to find a victim as yet. (Newswire)

A couple that had posted explicit content on the internet, with the woman posing as a schoolgirl, has been arrested by the Kadugannawa Police. 

The suspects have been identified as a 28-year-old woman from Ruwanwella and a 29-year-old man from Pilimathalawa. 

Investigations revealed that the couple had legally registered their marriage and are hoping to hold a wedding function next year, while they are graduates.

The couple had confessed to posting such fake videos on the internet to earn money, adding that they had earned Rs. 100,000 per month through the content.

The Police have taken into custody various equipment used for the production of the videos, including a computer, a school uniform, and a tie.

Investigations have revealed that the couple have an online user base of 4,400, while the last video shared by them has 8.7 million views.

The couple were arrested based on a complaint filed at the Kadugannawa Police Station. 

The suspects were released on strict bail conditions after being produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court. (NewsWire)
