Sri Lanka has met the stringent conditions imposed under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), removing barriers to the export of Blue Swimming Crab to the American market, the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Ocean Resources announced.

The ministry said in a statement that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that Sri Lanka’s crab harvesting practices and related regulations are “comparable in effectiveness” to American standards.

In November 2025, a U.S. court ruling had temporarily affected exports.

However, after reviewing scientific data and evidence submitted by the Fisheries Department, NARA, and other relevant agencies, NOAA reconsidered its decision and granted approval.

Key points of the approval are as follows;

  • Export rights confirmed: Sri Lanka now holds the mandatory “Comparability Finding” certificate required for fishery exports to the U.S.
  • Validity period: Approval is valid until December 31, 2029, allowing uninterrupted exports of Blue Swimming Crab during this period.
  • Eco‑friendly fishing: Sri Lanka’s fishing methods, which avoid harm to dolphins, turtles, and other marine mammals, received international recognition. (Newswire)

EDB Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe stated that export earnings rose to USD 1,641 million during the month of July.

He made this announcement while addressing a media briefing organized by the Government Information Department.

“This marks the highest monthly export growth Sri Lanka has ever achieved. Export income from the goods sector increased to USD 1,304 million, showing a 15.37% growth compared to last year. The services sector earned USD 337 million in export income. We’ve seen significant growth in apparel, tea, coconut-based products, processed foods, jewellery, vegetables, and fruits. In the services sector, transport showed a notable 14% increase in export earnings. The United States remains our largest export destination, with over USD 275 million in exports. Germany saw a 57% increase. We also observed remarkable growth in export income to countries like Italy, India, and Australia during July,” he said.

Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe further stated that from January to July, export earnings have now reached close to USD 10 billion.

“This is a remarkable increase and is Sri Lanka’s highest export growth over a seven-month period. We expect the foreign exchange reserves to reach USD 7.3 billion this year. Of the nearly USD 10 billion in export earnings, the goods sector contributed around USD 7.8 billion, while the services sector grew to USD 2,192 million. Overall, this reflects a 7.79% growth for the first seven months,” he said. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka has exported its first batch of low-salt, dried fish and fish chips (Maldive fish) produced using a new method, the air condition dehydration system.

According to Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera, moving away from the traditional method of drying fish on the beach in the sun, the new technology helps the fish, usually a type of tuna, be dried or processed, using ‘air condition dehydration’.

“With this method, we can present dried fish products that are very suitable for human consumption to the market. This will give us the foreign exchange that the country needs,” he said.

The Minister said as this method retains the fish oils, the quality of dried fish produced is of a higher level.

Minister Amaraweera pointed out that this new dehydration method can be used for several other products in the country as well.

The export of the first container of 10,000 kg of dried fish and fish chips using the new technology was done on Sunday (Jan 14) by Megafish, a company in Pahajjawa in the Southern Province.

The batch of dried fish and fish chips produced in Sri Lanka will be exported to Australia and Korea, making it the first such export to be done by Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a clarification on the recent media reports claiming Sri Lanka was considering exporting nearly 100,000 toque macaque monkeys to China.

The Embassy said in a statement that it has noticed recent disinformation on local and foreign media about Sri Lanka exporting “100 thousand” “endangered” toque macaque monkeys to a Chinese private company for “experimental purpose”, as well as detailed clarifications by the Minister of Agriculture and the Cabinet Spokesperson of Sri Lanka thereafter.

The Embassy said it has also checked with relevant authorities in Beijing, adding that the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the main government department supervising and managing the import and export of wild animals and plants, has clearly clarified that it is not aware of the request and has not received such an application from any side.

The Chinese Embassy further stated that it would like to stress that as a contracting party of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), China has already adopted its Wildlife Protection Law in 1988 with several amendments afterwards.

The Chinese government always attaches great importance to wildlife protection and actively fulfils international obligations, which makes China one of the top countries in the world in terms of wildlife protection legislation and law enforcement, it added.

The Chinese Embassy’s clarification comes after it was reported that Chinese Zoo Company, Zhejiang Wuyu Animal Breeding Co. Limited had made a written request from Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Ministry to export crop-damaging monkeys to be placed in their zoos for exhibition purposes.

In a letter addressed to the Agriculture Ministry, seen by NewsWire, the Chinese firm said it has made the offer based on reports that Sri Lanka was looking to get rid of certain crop-destroying species.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the government has not held any discussion on exporting Toque monkeys to China.

Minister Gunawardena told the media yesterday (18) that the proposal had been made along with several other proposals provided by various parties pertaining to the imports and exports of Sri Lanka.

He further said that thereby, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera made a proposal to export crop-destroying monkeys to 1000 Zoos operated by a private firm in China, adding that a committee has been appointed to address the matter. (NewsWire)

The Sri Lanka Army is considering introducing its locally produced food ration pack to foreign military services to generate foreign exchange for Sri Lanka.

According to the Army, the Meal- Ready-to-Eat (MRE) ration pack was initially imported from Malaysia and used by the Sri Lankan military during the civil war.

However, the Sri Lanka Army is now able to produce the same using rice and vegetables harvested by the Sri Lanka Army, with the processing and packaging conducted at the Army Farm in Kandakadu.

The food processing centre is monitored once in three months by agricultural and other experts, and it is said to be using technology capable of preventing bacteria that could contaminate the food, making it long-lasting.

The Sri Lanka Army prepares between 1750 to 2000 MRE ration packs daily for a cost of Rs. 1375.

The Army has pointed out that the suspension of MRE ration pack imports has saved Sri Lanka nearly Rs. 153 million and they intend to earn foreign exchange via exporting the locally manufactured MRE ration packets. (NewsWire)
