The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has determined that two Police Sergeants in Anuradhapura have violated the fundamental rights of an individual by inhumanely assaulting him to obtain a false confession.

It is reported that the Police officers had bound the hands and legs of the man and had assaulted him, seeking a confession regarding a robbery, but as the victim had refused to do so, they had instead, framed him for the possession of heroin and placed him in remand custody.

Taking into consideration the FR petition filed by the victim, a resident of Meegodawewa in Anuradhapura, the three-judge Supreme Court bench determined that the Police officers had violated the fundamental rights of the youth.

The Supreme Court further ordered the two Police officers to pay a compensation of Rs. 25,000 each from their personal funds to the victim and that it should be settled within one month. (Newswire)
