A collective of academics, journalists, feminist activists, and lawyers has issued a statement expressing concern and solidarity with Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, following reports that she has been summoned to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Issuing a statement, the collective stated that the summons is reportedly linked to an ongoing case against her husband, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, concerning the alleged use of public funds to attend a ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton. At the event, Professor Wickremesinghe was awarded an Honorary Professorship in recognition of her extensive research, training, and policy work on gender equity and equality.

Professor Wickremesinghe, who holds a PhD from the University of London, serves as Chair and Senior Professor of English at the University of Kelaniya and is the founding Director of its Centre for Gender Studies. With over three decades of teaching and research experience, she has contributed significantly to gender equality policy development, training, and programme evaluation both in Sri Lanka and internationally. Her doctoral work, Making Meaning of Meaning-making: A Case Study of Feminist Research Methodology in Sri Lanka, has been widely cited and published by Routledge, they said. 

The statement highlights her service on national and international advisory bodies, including the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Commonwealth Secretariat’s “Commonwealth Says No More” initiative. It also notes her role in catalysing the establishment of gender studies centres across Sri Lanka’s university system.

Signatories stressed that Professor Wickremesinghe is an independent scholar of recognised integrity and distinction, and warned that investigative processes must be conducted fairly, transparently, and in adherence to due process. They expressed concern that she appears to be drawn into proceedings that are political in nature and centred on allegations against her husband.

Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has arrived at the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) to record a statement.

She was summoned in connection with an investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving the accounts of the ‘Siriliya’ organization.

She was previously summoned by the FCID on Jan. 27, 2026, to provide a statement.

Through her attorney, she informed police she was unable to attend on that date and requested a two-week extension.

Former Minister Johnston Fernando has arrived at the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in connection with investigations into the alleged misuse of a Lanka Sathosa lorry. 

Johnston Fernando had been notified to appear before the FCID today after the Police had launched a probe to arrest him in connection with an incident where a Lanka Sathosa lorry was allegedly misused, causing a financial loss to the state.

Indika Ratnamalala, who served as Transport Manager at Lanka Sathosa during Fernando’s tenure as Minister of Cooperative and Internal Trade, was arrested yesterday (04) in relation to the same incident. 

He was remanded until January 09 after being produced before the Wattala Magistrate’s Court.

He was remanded on charges of preparing forged documents to allow a Sathosa lorry to be used by an ethanol company owned by the former Minister, for the benefit of his son, Johan Fernando. (Newswire)

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s former Chief of Staff, Sagala Ratnayaka, appeared before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) today.

It is reported that Sagala Ratnayaka had been summoned by the FCID and had reported this morning to record a statement. 

Earlier today, Sagala Ratnayaka arrived at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), after which he informed reporters that he had arrived at the wrong department.

National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa has recorded a statement with the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) over statements made regarding the wealth of former MP Basil Rajapaksa in the USA.

Speaking to the media, former MP Weerawansa said he had recorded a statement over comments made many years ago regarding the wealth of Basil Rajapaksa and his family members.

Wimal Weerawansa said that written information regarding his comments had been handed over to the Police. 

“Basil Rajapaksa was not employed in the US. Whatever assets he owns in the US, are from the wealth acquired through his job in Sri Lana. The assets are under his and his family members’ names,” Weerawansa said, adding that information in his possession was handed over to the authorities. 

He further stated that authorities should investigate the assets held by other relatives of Rajapaksa, as he does not have information about them.

Claiming that he also has information on other corrupt politicians, Weerawansa said everything cannot be revealed at once, and for now, he has only revealed about Basil Rajapaksa.
