Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (24 Feb) imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on a young woman who pleaded guilty to recording video footage of her father giving evidence in court.

The woman, a resident of Colombo, was fined after police reported that she had used her mobile phone to film her father testifying at the Colombo No. 2 Additional Magistrate’s Court.

A police officer on court duty had observed the incident, seized the suspect’s mobile phone, and handed her over to the Keselwatta Police. 

Investigators informed the court that the footage had been recorded without permission.

When the case was taken up today, the suspect pleaded guilty, leading to the fine being imposed. 

The Magistrate also warned her against engaging in such unlawful acts in the future and ordered that the video footage be deleted from her phone. (Newswire)

A young man who pleaded guilty to filming the legs of ​​a young woman travelling in a private bus in the Borella area with a mobile phone has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment, suspended for 20 years.

Issuing the verdict, Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela further imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on the accused and also ordered him to pay Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the victim. 

It was also ordered that the accused, a resident of Dematagoda, be sentenced to an additional six months in prison if the compensation is not paid to the victim.
