Postal voting for the 2024 General Election commenced today (Oct 30).

Officials at election offices and District Secretariats, and the Police will mark their ballots during office hours today. 

The National Election Commission says it has provided an opportunity to mark postal votes on the 1st and 4th of November, as well.

State employees who fail to cast their votes during this period have been allocated 07th and 08th November to cast their votes. 

Voters have been requested to carry documents such as the National Identity Card, Valid Driving License, Valid Passport, Temporary Identity Card issued by the Election Commission, or the Information Verification Letter issued by the Department of Registration of Persons for their identification during postal voting. The acceptance of nominations for the 2024 Parliamentary Election commenced today. 

Chairman of the National Election Commission R.M.A.L. Rathnayake states that the Commission has taken all necessary measures in this regard.

He further said that the acceptance of nominations which commenced today will continue until midnight on 11 October 2024.

Rathnayake went on to note that no incidents related to the General Election have been reported so far.

Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) Leader Dilith Jayaweera says a broader alliance will be formed to face the upcoming General Election.

Addressing the media, Dilith Jayaweera confirmed that his party will contest in all districts in the election.

The National Election Commission has announced an option for voters who have reasonable fear that they might not be able to cast their ballots at their registered polling station in the 2024 General Elections.

Issuing a statement, the Commission said such voters can request to cast their ballots at other polling stations, which will be allocated at the sole discretion of the Election Commission.

“Voters who have a reasonable fear that they may not be able to cast their ballots at their registered polling stations due to the situation in those areas can request the Election Commissioner to cast their ballots at a different polling station.”

“The said voters will be required to submit their written requests, along with their registered details, within a week of the announcement of nominations for the General Elections, which is on or before 01 October 2024,” the statement said.

According to the Election Commission, the request must be made at the Commission’s Office in Rajagiriya or their relevant District Secretariats.

The necessary request forms can be obtained from the area District Secretariats or Election Offices, and they can also be downloaded from the Election Commission’s website www.elections.gov.lk. (Newswire)
