Gold prices reversed course to slip ‌more than 1% on Thursday, snapping a four-day winning streak, after U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would continue the war in Iran over the coming weeks.

Spot gold fell 1.3% at $4,694.48 per ounce by 0202 GMT, while U.S. gold futures slid 1.9% to $4,723.70. Prices were up over 1% at their highest levels since March 19 before Trump’s remarks.

The United States would strike Iran “extremely hard” over the next two to three weeks and push it back into the “Stone Ages,” Trump told the nation in a televised speech, adding that U.S. strategic objectives in the conflict were close to being fulfilled.

“Gold is pulling back after two superb days, as President Trump was quite bellicose in his tone, referring to aggressive plans over the coming weeks… it suggests the optimism of the last few days was overexuberant and there will be some retracement ahead of the long weekend,” said independent metals trader Tai Wong.

Brent oil prices surged by more than 4%, while the ‌10-year U.S. Treasury yield and the dollar index advanced, weighing on the greenback-priced metal.

The metal dropped 11% in March, its worst monthly loss since 2008, after the onset of the conflict in Iran on February 28, which has driven oil prices higher and added to inflation pressures, clouding the Fed’s path for monetary policy.

Fed rate‑cut expectations remain low through most of 2026, with markets largely pricing in no change until a modest 25% chance of a cut emerges at the December meeting.

Despite gold’s appeal during periods of inflation and geopolitical tension, higher interest rates tend to curb bullion’s attractiveness by increasing the opportunity cost of holding the non‑yielding asset.

St. Louis Federal Reserve President Alberto Musalem said on Wednesday there is no need for the U.S. central bank to change its interest rate stance at this time amid rising inflation risks.

In other metals, spot silver fell 2.9% to $72.95, platinum dropped 1.8% to $1,928.26 and palladium shed 1.4% to $1,451.85. (Reuters)

Gold prices surged to a record high above $4,800 per ounce on Wednesday, buoyed by safe-haven demand and a softer ‌dollar as U.S. President Donald Trump’s pursuit of Greenland threatened to reignite a trade war with Europe and upend the NATO alliance.

Spot gold rose 1.2% to $4,821.26 per ounce by 0226 GMT, after scaling a record $4,843.67 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures for February delivery climbed 1% to $4,813.50 ‌per ounce.

“It’s the loss of trust in the U.S. caused by Trump’s moves over the weekend to tariff European countries and increase his coercion in trying to take Greenland.

On Tuesday, Trump said there was “no going back” on his goal to control Greenland, refusing to rule out taking the Arctic island by force and lashing out at NATO allies.

He later said, “We will work something out where NATO is going to be very happy and where we’re ‍going to be very happy.”

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe would not give in to bullies or ‌be ‌intimidated, in a scathing criticism of Trump’s threat of steep tariffs at Davos if Europe does not let him take over Greenland.

“Obviously investors are selling the dollar, they’re selling treasuries, particularly at the long-end, and buying gold instead because there is greater confidence in gold than in the US (currency) right now,” Rodda said.

The dollar languished near three-week lows against the euro and Swiss franc, and Asian stocks extended their losses for a third session, while a global bond rout appeared to slow for now.

A weaker dollar makes ‍greenback-priced metals cheaper for overseas buyers.

The Federal Reserve is broadly expected to maintain interest rates at its January 27-28 meeting despite Trump’s calls for cuts. Non-yielding bullion typically performs well in low-interest-rate environments.

Spot silver fell 1% to $93.59 an ounce, after hitting a record high of $95.87 ‍on Tuesday.

Spot platinum lost 0.7% to $2,445.96 per ounce after hitting a record $2,511.80 earlier in the day, while palladium was down 0.5% to $1,857.19. (Reuters)

Gold prices surged to a record high on Monday, riding on growing expectations of further US interest rate cuts and strong safe-haven demand, with silver also joining the rally to hit an all-time peak.

Spot gold XAU= rose 1.2% to a record $4,391.92 an ounce, while spot silver XAG= climbed 2.7% by 0344 GMT to hit a historic high of $69.23.

Bullion has gained 67% so far this year, shattering multiple records and breaching the $3,000 and $4,000 per-ounce milestones for the first time. It is poised for its biggest annual gain since 1979.

Silver has surged 138% year-to-date, vastly outperforming gold, underpinned by robust investment inflows and persistent supply constraints.

“With December usually producing positive returns for gold and silver, seasonality is on their side,” said StoneX senior analyst Matt Simpson.

“Given that gold has already risen 4% this month and we’re nearing the end of the year, bulls may want to tread with caution as volumes are to deplete and odds of profit-taking are also likely on the rise.”

Traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset, gold has been supported by heightened geopolitical and trade tensions, steady central bank buying and expectations of lower interest rates next year.

A softer dollar has provided an additional tailwind by making the metal cheaper for overseas buyers.

Markets are currently pricing in two US rate cuts for next year despite the Federal Reserve signalling caution. Non-yielding assets such as gold tend to benefit in lower interest rate environments.

Simpson said two Fed rate cuts were pencilled in for 2026, with a faster US jobs slowdown and a shift to a more dovish Fed likely to add further upside to gold.

Elsewhere, platinum XPT= jumped 4.1% to $2,054.25, hitting its highest in more than 17 years, while palladium XPD= climbed 4% to $1,781.32, hitting a near three-year high. (France 24/ Reuters)

Gold futures prices topped $4,000 per ounce for the first time on Tuesday as investors continue to seek safe havens for their money, with the US government essentially shut down and widespread uncertainty around the economy.

As of 9.10am ET, gold futures traded at $4,003 in New York. The going price for New York spot gold rose to $3,960.60 per troy ounce – the standard for measuring precious metals.

Sales of gold can rise sharply when anxious investors seek secure investments amid times of turbulence or uncertainty.

The asset – and other metals, like silver – had seen wider gains over the last year, particularly with Donald Trump’s barrage of tariffs disrupting much of the world economy.

Non-yielding gold, which tends to do well during times of uncertainty and low interest-rate environments, has climbed 52% so far this year.

The metal’s rally has been driven by a cocktail of factors, including expectations of interest rate cuts, ongoing political and economic uncertainty, solid central bank buying, inflows into gold-based funds and a weak dollar. (The Guardian)
