Senior Advisor to the President on Science and Technology, Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya, says the government officially launched an investor call this week for the domestic production of phosphate fertilizer.

Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya further said that to pave the way for this initiative, over 25 meetings were held to resolve necessary background issues, including regulatory frameworks, legal concerns, and various unexpected complications. 

These discussions involved ministers, officials, institutions, and the Attorney General’s Department, and the proposal was submitted to the Cabinet three separate times.

Special appreciation is due to Industry Minister Sunil Handunneththi, Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyaaratchi, the Attorney General and departmental officials, Industry Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, and all officials who courageously pushed this project forward despite obstacles. Gratitude also extends to all institutional representatives and experts in the field who contributed to this effort, he said.

Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya said that although Professor Oliver Ileperuma and his team completed research on this over 25 years ago, no one questioned why such a valuable project was never implemented until now.

American singer and rapper Aloe Blacc has arrived in Sri Lanka on a three-day visit to explore investment opportunities for the development of Sri Lanka. 

The Grammy-nominated singer is visiting Sri Lanka at the invitation of Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya, Senior Advisor to the President on Science and Technology. 

Welcoming the singer to Sri Lanka, Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya told the media that the American Singer was prepared to invest in Sri Lanka, including the tourism sector. 

Also speaking to the media, American singer Aloe Blacc said this was his first visit to Sri Lanka and he was excited to visit various parts of the country.

“My relationship with Professor Gomika Udugamasooriya has given me the opportunity to visit Sri Lanka and learn more about the country, to find ways to be part of developing and growth of this beautiful nation,” he said.

Prof. Gomika Udugamasooriya has been appointed as the President’s Senior Advisor on Science and Technology.

Professor Udugamasooriya, affiliated with the University of Houston and the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in the United States, received his appointment letter today (22) at the Presidential Secretariat from the Secretary to the President Dr. Nandaka Sanath Kumanayake.

An alumnus of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, Professor Udugamasooriya holds a specialized degree in Chemistry from the University of Colombo. He earned his Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Michigan, USA, and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

A holder of numerous patents, Professor Udugamasooriya’s decision to transition from his role in U.S. public service to take up the honorary position of Senior Advisor on Science and Technology is a notable development. (PMD)
