A total of 307,951 candidates sat for the examination at 2,787 centres across the country on 10th August. 

The results can be accessed online through the following official portals of the Department of Examinations:

Education Minister and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says there are no immediate plans to cancel the Grade 05 Scholarship Examination.

Addressing the Parliament today, the PM pointed out that the examination cannot be abolished immediately, as it could only be carried out in line with certain other reforms.

She further said that steps will be taken to minimise the pressure on students sitting for the examination, and that this will be done by 2028 and 2029.

The Sri Lanka Police have launched an inquiry into a Grade 05 scholarship tuition teacher who had misused Police vehicles for a private event, a video of which has been widely circulated on social media.

Speaking to Newswire, Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that the female tuition teacher had requested Police personnel and vehicles for an event held to honour students who had passed the Grade 05 Scholarship Examination.

He said she had claimed that the event would host 8000 students and 35,000 parents, due to which the security measures were required. 

“We conducted an intelligence check. As this event involved children and the background check was clear, we approved the request. We offered 20 Police officers, some Police motorcycles and a Police car for a payment of close to Rs. 200,000. We offered the service only after the payment was made in full,” he said.

SSP Buddhika Manathunga said, however, the tuition teacher had used the vehicles to boost her image, instead of utilising them for the requested purpose.

He said that, as such, a Police inquiry has been launched against her over the misuse of Police vehicles.

When inquired if individuals can use Police vehicles for personal use, the Police Spokesman revealed that the Sri Lanka Police provides vehicles for events that are ticketed and are used for common purposes.

“Events that are ticketed and generate an income can request Police security and vehicles. These are events such as film shootings, private carnivals and musical shows, welfare events, etc. An intelligence check is conducted, and based on clearance, the services are offered for a payment,” he said.

SSP Buddhika Manathunga said this is done as an additional income for the Sri Lanka Police, with the payments received being transferred to the government. 

He clarified that, however, events related to schools, welfare, and national events are provided with Police security free of charge, reiterating that Police vehicles will never be provided for the personal use of individuals. (Newswire)

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ruled that awarding free marks for the three leaked questions in the first paper of the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination violates fundamental human rights. 

The court further ordered the Commissioner General of Examinations to proceed with one of the most suitable recommendations provided by the expert committee appointed to probe the matter.

The Supreme Court also ordered the Director of the Planning Division at the National Institute of Education in Maharagama and a tuition teacher from Alawwa, arrested in connection to the paper leak, to pay compensation of Rs. 03 million and 02 million, respectively to the government. 

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination, which was held in September, faced a crisis after a mock paper was shared with the questions that had been featured in the exam paper. 

A practice paper with questions similar to some of the questions in the first paper of the scholarship exam was circulated by a tuition teacher in the Alawwa area prior to the exam.

At the time, the Department of Examinations launched an investigation into the matter following complaints filed by various parties.

A complaint was lodged by a Deputy Commissioner of the Examinations Department, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as well.

The Police thereafter, arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged leaking of questions from the Grade 5 scholarship exam. 

Soon after, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya instructed the Education Ministry to appoint a committee consisting of local and international experts to obtain recommendations on the matter. (Newswire)

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to submit a detailed report on the investigation into the leaking of questions from the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination.

The CID has been ordered by the court to submit a detailed report on the investigation by 09.00 am tomorrow (Dec 19).

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination was held in September with 323,879 students sitting for the exam.

A practice paper with questions similar to some of the questions in the first paper of the scholarship exam was circulated by a tuition teacher in the Alawwa area prior to the exam.

The Department of Examinations launched an investigation into the matter following complaints filed by various parties, while a complaint was also lodged by a Deputy Commissioner of the Department, prompting an investigation by the CID.

The Attorney General today informed the Supreme Court that the Cabinet has decided to award free marks for three contested questions in the Grade 05 scholarship exam.

Citing the undue pressure placed on students, it had also been decided to not reconduct the examination.

The development follows an interim order issued by the Supreme Court on November 18, halting the evaluation of answer sheets and the release of results for the scholarship examination held on September 15 this year.

The court’s decision came after considering four fundamental rights petitions that highlighted the alleged leakage of several exam questions, which petitioners argued had caused significant unfairness to candidates. (Newswire)

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has issued an interim injunction today suspending the release of the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination results. 

The court issued the order after deliberating a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by a group of parents and students.

Filing the petition, the group challenged the conduct of the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination.

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination, which was held in September, faced a crisis after a mock paper was shared with the questions that had been featured in the exam paper. 

A practice paper with questions similar to some of the questions in the first paper of the scholarship exam was circulated by a tuition teacher in the Alawwa area prior to the exam.

At the time, the Department of Examinations launched an investigation into the matter following complaints filed by various parties.

A complaint was lodged by a Deputy Commissioner of the Examinations Department, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as well.

The Police thereafter, arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged leaking of questions from the Grade 5 scholarship exam.

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination will be held once again under the Sajith Premadasa Government that will be formed following the 2024 Presidential Election, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Dayasiri Jayasekera said. 

Pointing out that the question paper of the just concluded Grade 05 Scholarship Examination had been leaked, MP Jayasekera said that discussions will be held after the election to reconduct the examination. 

Addressing an election rally recently, MP Jayasekera questioned how the Ranil Wickremesinghe-led government could govern the nation if they cannot conduct a simple examination.

“Ranil Wickremesinghe has proven once again that he cannot do anything. Once the election is over, we will hold discussions under the leadership of MP Sajith Premadasa on suspending the just concluded Grade 05 Scholarship Examination and results and will reconduct it.
