Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya says Grade 06 education reforms will be implemented in January 2027.

Addressing Parliament today (05), PM Amarasuriya said all preparations for the reforms are underway.

Commenting on the modules for Grade 06, she noted that the committee appointed to review previously printed modules, which were found to have issues, has completed its study, suggested amendments, and finalized discussions. 

The revised modules will be sent for printing this month, PM Amarasuriya said.

She further stated that teacher training under the new reforms will commence in June, with funds already allocated for the purpose.

The Education Minister added that briefings for teachers, parents, and students on the reforms will begin in July.

The Ministry of Education has announced that, based on the results of the 2025 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, the first round of appeals for admission to Grade 6 in schools for the year 2026 can be submitted online.

According to the ministry, appeals for admissions can be submitted until January 25, 2026.

Appeals may be submitted through the official Ministry website at www.moe.gov.lk, with the option to apply for up to three schools.

Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding an incident where the name of an inappropriate website was mentioned in a Grade 6 English language module.

Speaking to the media today (31 Dec), Kaluwewa said the Ministry of Education has reasonable suspicion that external influence may have been involved in including the name of the inappropriate website.

Stating that there has been opposition to the government’s education reforms and that the incident could be a sabotage attempt, he said a complaint has been lodged with the CID to conduct an inquiry. 

Earlier, the Ministry of Education said that the Grade 6 English language module prepared by the National Institute of Education has already been printed.

Therefore, the distribution of the module has been suspended, and an immediate investigation into the matter has been launched, the Ministry said, in a statement.

The matter came to light after social activist Tilini Shalvin highlighted that a typing error appearing in three places in the newly introduced Grade 6 syllabus had redirected users to an unintended website, instead of the educational application referenced in the lesson.

Subsequent checks by authorities confirmed that the incorrect reference directed users to a website catering to a gay audience, prompting concerns over the suitability of the content for school material.

Responding to the issue, the Ministry of Education said an inquiry was initiated after receiving a complaint regarding an inappropriate web reference in a Grade 6 English module prepared by the National Institute of Education.

The Ministry confirmed that an initial review had verified the complaint, following which distribution of the printed module was immediately suspended. An investigation had also been launched with immediate effect to identify those responsible.

The Ministry added that corrective steps will be taken following the outcome of the inquiry, and measures will be introduced to prevent similar lapses in future syllabus reforms. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Education says the deadline for submitting student applications for Grade 6 admission through the online system has been extended, considering the disaster situation in Sri Lanka. 

Issuing a statement, the Ministry said that based on the re‑scrutinized results of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, principals have been informed about the extension of the deadline for submitting student applications for Grade 6 admission through the online system, as well as the timeline for appeals.

The re‑scrutinized results of the 2025 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination have now been released, and applications for students whose results have changed were called and entered into the online system by principals starting from November 26, 2025. 

Although it was earlier announced that the online submission facility would be deactivated after December 5, 2025, due to the prevailing disaster situation, this deadline has now been extended to December 12, 2025.

Furthermore, the first round of appeals for Grade 6 admissions in 2026 based on the 2025 Scholarship Examination results has not yet commenced, and messages circulating on social media in this regard are false. 

After the students selected in the first round are admitted to schools in January 2026, applications for appeals will be called online to fill the remaining vacancies, the Education Ministry added. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Education has announced the acceptance of applications for Grade 06 of state schools for the year 2025.

Issuing a statement, the Education Ministry said that the applications based on the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Exam results will be accepted online.

The applications will be accepted from today (09 Apr) until 30 April, via http://g6application.moe.gov.lk.

The Education Ministry states applications will be considered for a maximum of three (03) schools.
