The Department of Motor Traffic has reportedly announced that number plates with a green background will be issued for all electric vehicles, with Commissioner General Retired Air Vice Marshal Thushara Fernando confirming their legal validity.

Thushara Fernando noted that other vehicles will continue to receive plates in white and yellow.

The  Department of Motor Traffic further stated that new number plates have been prepared for 88,740 registered vehicles, including 56,233 plates registered between June 10 and August 31, 2026, and 32,507 plates registered in 2023 and 2024.

Vehicle owners have been advised to collect their plates from the Narahenpita Motor Traffic Department office. (Newswire)
