The Hambantota International Port (HIP) states it closed 2025 with a 175% increase in cargo volumes, handling 8.24 million metric tonnes, up from 3.0 million in 2024.

Issuing a statement, HIP said that this is despite one of the most challenging years the global port industry has faced.

“Containers powered our momentum: volumes surged from 53,170 TEUs to 428,036 TEUs in just one year, marking our rapid emergence as a key container gateway. RORO remained resilient: we handled 726,153 units, supported by steady automotive and project cargo demand.  Bulk and breakbulk grew by 32%, strengthening our role in industrial and infrastructure supply chains,” HIP further said.

HIP CEO Wilson Qu said this performance reflects the confidence of its customers, the flexibility of its operations, the strength of its marketing efforts, and the commitment of its people, even amid global disruption and uncertainty.

“With a transformed cargo base and strong momentum across all segments, we enter 2026 focused on sustaining growth while continuing to support trade, industry, and Sri Lanka’s economic development,” Wilson Qu added. (Newswire)
