The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has urged the Ministry of Mass Media to take immediate action against Hiru Media Network and Asia Broadcasting Corporation (Pvt) Ltd, accusing the broadcaster of gravely misusing media freedom and spreading false information that harmed the institution and the country.

In a letter addressed to the Ministry Secretary, CPC Chairman said repeated irresponsible reporting by Hiru Media Network has damaged the CPC’s reputation, undermined public trust, and posed risks to the national economy and energy security.

The complaint centred on a news broadcast aired on April 16, which alleged Sri Lanka paid USD 286 per barrel for crude oil. CPC described the report as entirely false, noting that the channel distorted international reports, misrepresented import details, and falsely suggested CPC was responsible for such a transaction. Despite CPC issuing an official clarification, Hiru Media Network continued to broadcast the claim, citing HSBC in a distorted manner, the statement said.

The Chairman warned that such misinformation could trigger public unrest, erode confidence in a nationally significant institution, damage international credibility, and negatively affect Sri Lanka’s relations with foreign suppliers and lenders.

He requested the Ministry to launch an immediate investigation, review compliance with media standards, order a retraction and correction of the false report, and implement regulatory measures to prevent recurrence.

The CPC Chairman stressed that while freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, deliberate dissemination of false information that undermines the national economy cannot be tolerated.

Minister K.D. Lal Kantha has issued a legal notice against Asia Broadcasting Corporation (Private) Limited, accusing the local broadcaster of misrepresenting his 2025 assets and liabilities declaration and publishing defamatory content.

The notice, dated April 18, states that Hiru Media Network aired a news segment on April 16 alleging the minister’s assets exceeded Rs. 460 million, citing details from his declaration.
Lal Kantha contends the figures were deliberately exaggerated and misinterpreted, particularly claims regarding property and company shares in his daughter’s name.

According to the legal notice, the declaration submitted to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) included assets under his name, his wife’s, and his daughter’s, but the broadcaster presented them in a misleading manner.

The minister argues that the report, along with its republication across digital platforms under the headline “Minister Lal Kantha’s assets exceed Rs. 460 milion,” was intended to damage his reputation.

In the legal notice sent to a television network, the Minister stated that shares held in his daughter’s name — valued at approximately Rs. 143,000 — had been inaccurately reported as investments worth hundreds of millions of rupees.

The shares in question were purchased for around Rs. 90,000 and currently hold a value close to Rs. 143,000, he said.

However, the media report had claimed that securities worth over Rs. 380 million across multiple companies were owned, which the Minister describes as “completely false and misleading.”

The notice further claims that the broadcast has caused severe harm to the minister’s public image, portraying him as corrupt and misleading voters, supporters, and the wider public.

Minister Lal Kantha is seeking Rs. 10 billion in damages within seven days and has warned that failure to comply will result in legal proceedings, including recovery of costs and interest.

The minister also indicated he would petition authorities to revoke Hiru Media Network’s broadcasting license, alleging misuse of a public frequency for partisan and defamatory purposes. (Newswire)

A local television channel has been ordered to pay compensation for unlawfully terminating the services of a journalist who had been employed for 08 years with the institution. 

It was reported that announcing its judgement, the court said the television channel had failed to prove its allegations against the journalist, at the time of the termination of service.

The court further ruled that the allegations levelled against the journalist may have been made by the management arbitrarily without any basis.

Accordingly, the court ordered Asia Broadcasting Corporation (pvt) ltd (ABC networks) to pay a compensation of Rs.13.5 million to journalist Nirosh Maithri. 

Announcing the judgement, the court mentioned that there is an appeal period until August 02 for the respondents. However, until then, the relevant compensation should be deposited to the court.
