The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development to complete remaining road construction works that will improve access to the Homagama, Pitipana, Mahenawatta Tech City Project.

The Tech City initiative was launched to strengthen the national economy by focusing on innovation and knowledge‑based technology. 

To ease traffic congestion in Homagama town and provide direct access to the Tech City, construction of the Western bypass road from Homagama, Walawwatte to Kotuwana began in 2020. Only about 50 meters of road remains to be built to connect it with the High Level Road.

In addition, plans are underway to link the Pitipana–Dampe Road through the Tech City interior with the Kottawa–Talagala Road via an access road from the University of Sri Lanka to the Sri Lanka Institute of Biotechnology. About 650 meters of this road section remains incomplete.

Both the bypass road connection and the biotechnology access road will be completed using domestic funds, ensuring direct connectivity for the Tech City and easing regional traffic flows. (Newswire)

A 41‑year‑old man who drove part‑time as a hired motorcycle rider through an app was found murdered in Homagama, early yesterday (16).

Police said the victim, a resident of Pitipana, had left home around 7.00 pm on July 15 to transport a passenger on a hired journey. 

His body was discovered the following morning, with post‑mortem examinations confirming he had been killed by a severe throat‑cutting.

Investigators suspect the crime was committed inside a nearby auction land. The killers have fled with the victim’s motorcycle, gold chain, mobile phone, and wallet. 

At the scene, police recovered a pair of slippers believed to belong to the deceased and a 20‑rupee note.

The magistrate’s inquiry and subsequent autopsy at Homagama Base Hospital confirmed the death was a deliberate homicide.

More details have emerged regarding the death of a 19‑year‑old student of a private university in Homagama, following a violent clash between two groups of undergraduates.

According to reports, the university had organized a New Year festival on Thursday (09), which concluded around 6 pm.

However, later that night, a group of students is reported to have held a private party at a hotel, where the incident unfolded.

During the party, a female student went to the washroom, followed by another male student. 

The deceased, identified as her friend, allegedly assaulted the student who followed her. In retaliation, a group of friends of the assaulted student attacked him severely before fleeing.

Hotel staff rushed the injured student to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The victim has been identified as a resident of Nikadalupotha, Wellawa.

According to Ada Derana, five students have been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are underway. There is no official confirmation from the Sri Lankan Police yet, in this regard. (Newswire)

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has announced a 12‑hour water cut in the Homagama and Pelanwatta areas due to prevailing dry weather conditions.

According to the Board, water supply to Homagama will be suspended from 8.00 p.m. today (09) until 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (10). 

The affected areas include Homagama town, Wekanda Road, Pinketha Road, Walawwa Road, Gamunu Mawatha, Athurugiriya Road, Galavilawatta, Niyandagala, Mahakatuwana, Magammana, Deniya, and Diyagama University.

In addition, water supply to Pelanwatta, Siddamulla, Aruwala, Nivanthidiya, Bokundara Road, Ratmaldeniya, Maharagama–Piliyandala Road, Moraketiya Road, Hiripitiya, Gorakapitiya Road, Niyandagala Road – Dolekade Junction, Kudamaduwa up to the 225 bus route, and Pubudu Mawatha up to the 225 bus route will be suspended tomorrow (10) from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

A father of one has been sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a 03-year-old child. 

It is reported that the 46-year-old man was sentenced after being found guilty of having sexually molested the child, who was his relative. 

The Homagama Magistrate’s Court had issued the verdict and had also imposed a fine on the suspect.

NPP Colombo District MP Aruna Panagoda says a decision has been taken to relocate a herd of deer found roaming in several Grama Seva Divisions in Homagama. 

MP Panagoda informed Parliament yesterday that a herd of between 1500 to 2500 deer was in the area destroying the products of farmers in the area. 

“There is a huge deer population in 5 or 6 Grama Seva Divisions of our Homagama electorate. We have been working for years to rectify this situation. The Wildlife Department has now taken an approach to remove these animals from here,” he said. 

MP Panagoda said that together with the Wildlife Department, they began a survey to estimate the deer population in the constituency.

“Currently, information has been received that a population of between 1,500 and 2,500 deer is destroying all the products of farmers in 5 or 6 Grama Seva Divisions around Homagama town,” he said.

Unidentified gunmen have opened fire at a residence, believed to belong to a drug lord, in the Pelendagoda area in Panagoda, Homagama, before fleeing.

Preliminary Police investigations reveal that two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had shot at the house early this morning and fled the area.

A 09 mm weapon is found to have been used in the shooting, with the Police recovering two empty bullets and a live bullet in the lane in front of the house.

It is suspected that this shooting was done on the orders of another drug trafficker, living abroad, due to the owner of the house buying drugs from several other drug traffickers.

No persons living in the house had been injured in the shooting, while a parapet wall and window of the house had been damaged.

Cabinet approval has been granted for the allocation of a block of land in Pitipana, Homagama on a lease of 30 years for the construction of a grid substation by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). 

As the need for electricity for urban development projects related to science and technology cities has increased, the CEB had requested the Urban Development Authority to allocate a portion of land from the Mahenawatta land located in Pitipana, Homagama for the construction of a grid substation in that area.

A 14-year-old student of the Panagoda Parakrama Vidyalaya in Athurugiriya has died due to a sudden illness, it was reported.

According to Lankadeepa, the Grade 09 student was pronounced dead after being admitted to the Oruwala District Hospital. 

The deceased has been identified as a 14-year-old resident of the Mullegama area in Homagama. 

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the girl had informed her mother of pain in her hand while studying with her friends at her house after school yesterday.

The child’s mother had tended to home medication after which she had returned to studying with her friends but had suddenly vomited and collapsed.

The Police have raided a park belonging to a private institution in Homagama after receiving complaints of minors allegedly behaving in an indecent manner in small rooms built within the grounds. 

According to media reports, the Homagama Police had raided the park on Sunday (Sep 24) following complaints that school-aged children were allegedly misbehaving with minors visiting the park. 

Parents and religious leaders from the area have requested the Police to take action after which the Police had obtained a search warrant from the Homagama Magistrate’s Court and raided the park. 

Around 24 young couples who were allegedly behaving indecently within the rooms were taken into Police custody following the raid.

The Police had thereafter advised the group and had released the females to their respective guardians. 

Investigations have found that a majority of the young couples have arrived at the park after informing that they are attending tuition class.

The chemical factory that was destroyed due to a fire in the Katuwana Industrial Zone in Homagama yesterday was not in possession of an Environmental Protection Licence, the Central Environmental Authority said on Friday (Aug 18).

Media spokesman of the Authority Ajith Weerasundara told reporters today that the fire had caused damage to the atmosphere, while the collection of wastewater had also caused harm to the surrounding environment. 

According to Ada Derana, Weerasundara further stated that the Katuwana Industrial Zone administration must take responsibility for failing to obtain the necessary documentation for the chemical factory which is in operation since last December.
