The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in Geneva has formally presented the Extension of Service to Christian Steppan, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Tyrol, Austria, during a recent (12) meeting.

According to the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Tyrol, Austria, the discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations, promoting cultural exchange, and deepening economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Tyrol. 

Both sides highlighted the importance of fostering professional collaboration in the hospitality and tourism sectors, with the Honorary Consul outlining proposals to enhance Sri Lanka’s visibility in Tyrol and to promote trade and business‑to‑business contacts.

The Commission of Appointment to Petra Winzer as the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Salzburg was handed over by the Chargé d’Affairs a.i. of Sri Lanka in Austria, Mahesh Gunawardana, recently (09), at the premises of the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Salzburg.

According to the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna, Honorary Consul Petra Winzer expressed her appreciation for the honour and the trust of the Government of Sri Lanka in appointing her as the new Honorary Consul in Salzburg and committed to do her utmost to promote Sri Lanka in the economic, cultural and tourism fields.

In addition, she expressed interest in participating with her company, Bio-Nahrungsmittel, in the Sri Lanka Expo 2027, scheduled to take place in Colombo, in January 2027, while encouraging other Austrian companies located in Salzburg to participate at the Expo 2027.

She is the widow of the former Honorary Consul in Salzburg, late Christian Winzer, who was the founder of Bio-Nahrungsmittel, a company established in 1979, which is a leading company in the field of health and natural products and certified organic food, distributing in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the rest of Europe. High Commissioner Yasoja Gunasekera has officially handed over the Commission of Appointment to Dimuthu Samaranayake, the newly appointed Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Adelaide, with consular jurisdiction covering South Australia. 

The ceremony took place at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra.

According to the High Commission, Samaranayake is a project management professional in the mining industry and has been actively involved in several Sri Lankan community associations in Adelaide.

Congratulating him on the appointment, High Commissioner Gunasekera emphasized the importance of strengthening Sri Lanka’s engagement with South Australia, particularly in advancing trade, investment, and tourism opportunities.

Samaranayake expressed his commitment to providing effective consular services to the approximately 10,000-strong Sri Lankan community in South Australia, in close cooperation with the High Commission in Canberra and the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne.

Sri Lanka has appointed Mohamed Ismath as the country’s Honorary Consul for the province of Manitoba in Canada. 

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Canada Harsha Kumara Navaratne handed over the Commission of Appointment to the new Honorary Consul on March 25, 2024, at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa.

According to the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa, Honorary Consul Ismath is currently a Board of Director of Tennis Canada, a non-profit national sports association with a mission to lead the growth of tennis in Canada. He is a retired accountant and is an old boy of Royal College, Colombo.

During the ceremony to hand over the Commission of Appointment, the High Commissioner suggested that possibilities of promoting tourism through sports collaboration apart from routine consular assistance should be explored given the Honorary Consul’s background. He also highlighted the importance of obtaining training opportunities for Sri Lankan tennis players in Canada and emphasized the need to establish Business Councils in each Canadian Province to facilitate trade and tourism between the two countries.

The Honorary Consul informed that over 5000 Sri Lankans are living in the province of Manitoba including a group of seniors who are already engaged in promoting Sri Lanka as a tourist destination.  He said that he will be working closely with all associations and looks forward to networking with Sri Lankan  Honorary Consuls in other provinces to synergize the efforts of the High Commission going forward.  Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Ottawa Anzul Jhan and Minister Counsellor of the High Commission Lashinka Dammullage were also present at the discussions with the  Honorary Consul.
