The Ministry of Public Security has opened the ‘118 Public Security Service Centre’ to streamline public complaints related to institutions under its purview. 

The centre was inaugurated at the Ministry premises under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala.

The new facility allows citizens to lodge complaints via the toll‑free 118 hotline or through the online portal 118.pubsec.gov.lk. 

Complaints can be submitted regarding institutions including the Department of Immigration and Emigration, the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the Office of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, and the Civil Security Department.

Deputy Minister Watagala, addressing the media, said the hotline can also be used to provide tip‑offs on drugs and illegal firearms, with confidentiality assured. 

He added that citizens may use the service to draw the attention of the Minister or Deputy Minister of Public Security directly.

However, he cautioned that legal action will be taken against those providing false information through the hotline.

Sri Lanka Police have reiterated that the 119 emergency telephone service must be used strictly for reporting genuine emergencies, warning that misuse of the hotline is a punishable offence under the Penal Code.

Issuing a statement, the Police Department said that the 119 emergency telephone service is intended only for reporting emergencies. 

The Police emphasize that this service must be used strictly for urgent situations and genuine emergencies, and that all calls are monitored.

Accordingly, in the event of an emergency, the public is advised to immediately contact the 119 emergency call centre to provide accurate information so that swift action can be taken.

At the same time, authorities warn that providing false information through the 119 emergency hotline is a punishable offence under Sri Lanka’s Penal Code, and legal action will be taken against such misuse.

Sri Lanka Police has established the IGP Special Operations Unit to provide information on the Emergency Disaster Situation.

According to the Police, due to the unexpected severe weather conditions impacting the island, numerous areas have experienced heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, and landslides. Evacuation notices have been issued to residents in several affected regions.

To ensure effective coordination during this emergency and to deliver essential assistance, an IGP Special Operations Unit has been set up at Police Headquarters under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). 

Police officers at stations island wide have been organized into teams to respond promptly to disaster-related incidents within their respective jurisdictions. Disaster-response equipment such as boats and diving gear has also been prepared for immediate deployment.

The government has introduced hotlines for reporting emergency disaster situations arising in the Colombo District due to the prevalent adverse weather conditions. 

The emergency contact numbers were introduced during a meeting of the Colombo District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit today (27).

The Ministry of Health has introduced the special hotline ‘1907’ for the public to inform of fake medical practitioners in Sri Lanka. 

Issuing a statement, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) said that the hotline has been established to protect the public from these fake doctors.

The GMOA said investigations have revealed that over 40,000 fake medical practitioners are operating in various parts of Sri Lanka at present.

Pointing out that several proposals had been made to the Health Ministry in this regard, the GMOA said as a result, the Police have commenced collecting information on fake doctors.

The GMOA has also organized an awareness campaign to be conducted in this regard in the near future.
