The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says statements will be obtained today (16) from officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as part of ongoing investigations into complaints that former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Sallay has been subjected to torture while in detention.

Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa confirmed that the inquiry continues following a complaint lodged by Sallay’s relatives, alleging he had faced various forms of ill‑treatment in CID custody.

Based on the complaint, a special inspection was carried out on the detention cell where Sallay is being held. The HRCSL noted several shortcomings, including inadequate ventilation and other basic deficiencies, in the facility.

The Commission said it has already informed CID officials of these concerns and has recorded statements from other detainees housed near Sallay’s cell, as well as from CID officers.

Further statements from CID officials are scheduled, while the HRCSL also stated that attention has been directed to the medical facilities currently being provided to Sallay, who remains hospitalized. (Newswire)

Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella’s daughter, Chamithri Rambukwella has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) claiming that her father’s human rights have been violated.

MP Keheliya Rambukwella is currently in remand custody in connection to the case related to the importation of substandard Immunoglobulin vaccines and has been denied bail on multiple occasions.

Filing a complaint with the HRCSL today (Mar 27), Chamithri Rambukwella claims that her father’s human rights have been violated.

She has further called on the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka to immediately conduct an investigation into the matter.

Earlier this week, Chamithri Rambukwella had also filed a bail application at the Colombo High Court for her father’s release.

Filing a revision petition at the Colombo High Court, she requested that her father be released on bail conditions the court deems fit.

However, the Attorney General raised preliminary objections against the bail application for Keheliya Rambukwella.

Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama representing the Attorney General informed the court that the petitioner has failed to disclose all material facts to the court including the Magistrate’s court proceedings dated February 29, 2024.

High Court Judge Sujeewa Nissanka has fixed the hearing regarding the Attorney General’s preliminary objections to April 03, 2024. (NewsWire)
