An individual who had pretended to be a Police Chief Inspector (CI) and had been involved in various crimes over the last 25 years has been arrested.

The man, who has reportedly been in hiding, was arrested in Nittambuwa by the Gampaha Police.

A 50-year-old man was arrested in the Kansalagamua area under the Rambukkana Police Division for the possession of an illegally assembled car, authorities said.

The Special Task Force (STF) Kegalle Camp conducted the raid on Feb. 13 based on intelligence reports.

Officers found that the vehicle had no valid registration certificate, and its identity had not been verified.

The suspect, a resident of Rambukkana, was handed over to the Rambukkana Police Station for further investigation.

Police are continuing inquiries into the incident. (NewsWire)

Sri Lanka Police busted an illegal vehicle assembling business with a suspect being arrested in the Matale area on Tuesday (Dec 31).

According to the Police, an individual was arrested in Kadawatha for the possession of three luxury jeeps with fake number plates and without valid documents in 2023.

The Police said the suspect was produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s court and the investigation was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). 

The CID probe found the involvement of another suspect from the Matale area, who was arrested with 08 luxury vehicles parked in his residence. 

The Police said the suspect did not possess any valid documents for the eight vehicles and was taken into custody this week along with the vehicles.

Further investigations found that the man had been involved in illegally assembling and selling vehicles using false documents, defrauding the government of taxes. (Newswire)
