The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings to ten (10) districts, effective until 10.00 pm today.

Accordingly, red alerts have been issued to some areas of the Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Amber alerts have been issued to some areas of the Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Yellow alerts have been issued to some areas of the Badulla, Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts.

The NBRO has issued landslide warnings due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the districts due to the inclement weather conditions in Sri Lanka.  (Newswire)

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, the Department of Meteorology said.

Fairly heavy showers, exceeding 50 mm, are likely in parts of the Sabaragamuwa province and the Nuwara Eliya district.

The Northern and North-central provinces will experience light showers, while Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts may see showers or thundershowers in the evening or night.

Strong winds between 40-50 kmph are expected over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala districts.

The public is advised to take precautions against strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Key Updates:

Rainfall Forecast: Several spells of showers are predicted for the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Thundershowers may also occur in other sea areas around the island.

Wind Conditions: Winds will be south-westerly with speeds of 30-40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 55-65 kmph in the sea areas off the coasts from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, and from Hambantota to Batticaloa via Pottuvil.

Sea Conditions: The sea areas off the coasts from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, and from Hambantota to Batticaloa via Pottuvil may be rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are urged to be cautious due to temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka Police has established several emergency hotlines to assist the public affected by the prevalent inclement weather conditions.

Accordingly, the Police have established a Special Operations Room with the following emergency hotlines:

  • Email: disasterops@police.gov.lk 

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre has also requested that the public affected by adverse weather conditions contact the centre for assistance.
