The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development (MoIED) have entered into a strategic partnership to strengthen institutional and technical capacity for industrial transformation. 

The collaboration includes the establishment of an Expert Support Unit designed to accelerate industrial development, enhance entrepreneurship and SME competitiveness, and advance evidence‑based policymaking.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed recently between J. M. Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary of the Ministry of Entrepreneurship Development, and Azusa Kubota, UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, in the presence of Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe.

The Expert Support Unit will be embedded within the Ministry, providing high‑quality technical, analytical, and coordination expertise across priority areas such as SME development, industrial zone development, trade and policy, digital transformation, data analytics, skills development, and international relations.

Sri Lanka’s industrial sector is a key driver of economic growth, employment generation, and export competitiveness. As the Ministry’s mandate expands to address emerging opportunities and challenges, the new unit is expected to deliver agile and targeted expertise to strengthen programme implementation, foster policy innovation, improve stakeholder engagement, and enhance strategic coordination.

Commenting on the Government of Sri Lanka’s vision on this area, Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Chathuranga Abeysinghe stated, “Sri Lanka’s ambitions for industrial growth, entrepreneurship development, and export competitiveness require agile institutions equipped with the right expertise and innovative approaches. Drawing on UNDP’s experience supporting innovative government capacity-building mechanisms, the initiative will facilitate the rapid deployment of technical specialists while strengthening systems for project management, monitoring, reporting, and performance measurement. The partnership also seeks to mobilize support from development partners and private sector stakeholders to ensure sustainable and impactful results.

The Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development says the Industrial Disaster Support Centre (IDSC) has recorded 18,321 entries or inquiries as of today (15 Dec). 

According to the ministry, among these, 6,362 industries under the Ministry of Industries’ production sector have been affected, along with 7,510 micro‑enterprises, 6,256 small‑scale enterprises, 3,998 medium‑scale enterprises, and 557 large‑scale enterprises.

To notify affected industries, the hotline 0712666660 was introduced, and the ministry had requested industry owners to provide relevant information to the system as soon as possible.

This data submission must be completed before 2 pm tomorrow (16 Dec), and information can be entered via www.industry.gov.lk.

A special meeting between officials from the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development and representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) took place at the ministry today (08), during which ministry officials presented a detailed analysis of their goals and strategies for 2030 to the IMF representatives. 

According to the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship, key performance indicators (KPIs) such as increasing the contribution of industries and manufacturing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), enhancing entrepreneurship, and boosting exports were among the key topics discussed.

The meeting also focused on the ministry’s strategic reforms, measures to facilitate business operations, and challenges faced by domestic industries. Attention was also drawn to financial policies and issues related to land allocation.

A notable highlight of the meeting was the IMF delegation’s praise for the transparency maintained by the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development.

The meeting was attended by IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou, Resident Representative Martha Woldemichael, Senior Economist Dinar Prihardini, Economist Ursula Wiriadinata, Local Economist Manavee Abevawickrama, Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti, Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, and several chairpersons and officials of institutions under the ministry.
