A three‑month‑old infant was killed in a road accident when a three‑wheeler overturned on the Nittambuwa–Ruwanwella road in the Gonagala area on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the vehicle, travelling towards Nittambuwa, toppled after the driver lost control. 

A woman seated in the back, along with her infant, sustained serious injuries in the crash. 

Both were admitted to the Avissawella Hospital, where the infant succumbed to injuries. The deceased child was a resident of Gonagala. 

The driver of the three‑wheeler has been taken into custody, and further investigations are being conducted by the Ruwanwella Police. (Newswire)

A female child, aged 03 months and 23 days, has died in a multi-vehicle collision reported on the Colombo-Kandy main road in the Peliyagoda Police Division last evening.

According to the Police, a three-wheeler travelling from Colombo towards Kandy had collided with a motorcycle and a car parked near a pedestrian crossing near Rohana Viharaya. 

Two young children travelling in the three-wheeler were seriously injured in the accident, with the infant succumbing to injuries after being admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo. 

The mother of the children, the driver of the three-wheeler and another person who was travelling in the three-wheeler were also injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased infant has been identified as a resident of Pattiya Junction, Kelaniya. The Peliyagoda Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

An infant has been found abandoned near a house in the Devagoda area in Madampagama, Ambalangoda. 

According to Ambalangoda Police Headquarters, the child has been admitted to the Balapitiya Base Hospital. 

The infant, assumed to be months old, had been found abandoned near the wall of a house in the Devagoda area.

A woman who had seen movement near the wall had inspected the area and had found the abandoned infant, following which she had informed area residents and then the Police.

A Police complaint has been filed after a couple was handed over the body of the wrong infant by the Gampaha Hospital, the Gampaha Police Headquarters stated. 

According to Lankadeepa, a woman had undergone a c-section birth at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital on May 29 after which the baby had been transferred to the Gampaha Hospital and was receiving treatment at the Premature Baby Unit.

The hospital yesterday handed over the body of a 22 days old infant, during which the couple inspected the baby and informed that it was not their child. 

The preliminary magisterial inquiry was conducted by the Gampaha Acting Magistrate Mahesh Herath at the hospital yesterday.

The said couple had also inspected the child during this process during which the mother had revealed that the child was not the one she had given birth to at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital. 

The Police stated that the woman’s husband had also inspected the child and confirmed that it was not their infant.

The Police further stated that a DNA test will be conducted to identify the child’s biological parents. 

The Gampaha Acting Magistrate has ordered the Police to conduct a DNA test. (NewsWire)

A 06-month old infant has died in a home accident in the Thoravil area in Puthukkudiyiruppu, Mullaitivu.

The Police stated that the child had sustained injuries in an accident involving a fire caused by a bottle lamp.

The infant who had been exposed to the fire had succumbed to injuries two days ago (01) after being admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. 

Investigations have revealed that the family of the infant lives in a single-room-like house due to economic difficulties.

A seven-month-old female infant has died after getting stuck in a safety fence that was erected around a bed in a house in the Maspanna village in Uva Paranagama.

According to Lankadeepa, the child had died due to injuries sustained after falling off the bed and onto the fence made out of wood.

The mother of the child who was attending to household chores had found the child fallen onto the fence and had rushed her to the hospital during which time she had succumbed to injuries.

The unmarried couple that had abandoned a 13-day-old infant in the toilet of the Batticaloa-bound Meenagaya express train recently have sought full custody of the child.

The couple had sought the permission of the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court for full custody of the child on the promise of legally marrying.

Senior Counsel Lakshan Dias appearing for the couple informed the court that his clients are preparing to legally marry today for the well-being of the child.

After taking into consideration the request, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the couple to be released on two sureties.

The Magistrate also ordered the Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children to hand over the infant to the couple and for the infant to be placed under the direct supervision of a Probation Officer.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has proposed to establish special infant receiving centres at hospitals in all nine provinces, it was reported.

According to Daily Mirror, NCPA Chairman Udayakumara Amarasinghe said the proposed infant receiving centres will allow parents to hand over their infants without revealing their identity.

Addressing the media yesterday (13), Amarasinghe stated that the proposal pertaining to the infant receiving centres was drafted by the NCPA in 2021 in order to assist parents who are unable to bring up their newborns due to various reasons. 

Stating that the proposal was submitted to the Cabinet in 2021, Amarasinghe stated that, however, the Cabinet Office had pointed out that the proposal must be presented through the Department of Probation and Child Care Services.

NCPA Chairman Udayakumara Amarasinghe pointed out that such infant-receiving centres were popular in India, adding that it was necessary to establish such centres with the recent increase in the abandonment of infants in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

A 09-month-old infant has died in a motor accident reported in the Kurunegala lake drive area last evening.

The Police stated that a three-wheeler that was travelling from Yanthampalava to Bamunugedera had crashed into a utility pole due to the driver losing control of the vehicle.

The driver of the three-wheeler and four other passengers of the vehicle who sustained injuries in the accident were admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital.

The Police stated that a 09-month old child had succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
