According to the Department of Census and Statistics, the figure is an increase compared to the 6.8% reported last month.  

Food inflation has also increased to 6.3% in July 2026, compared to the 3.6% recorded in June 2026.

However, non-food inflation has decreased to 7.8% in July 2026 from the 8.4% reported in June.

Inflation in Sri Lanka could climb as high as 7 per cent due to rising fuel prices and the prolonged conflict in the Middle East, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has warned.

Speaking during a televised interview, he noted that while the war in the Middle East was initially expected to ease, its continuation has already had a severe impact on the economy. 

“We still don’t see any reduction in consumption. That is why there is a risk that inflation, which is at 5%, could rise further. Fuel prices have risen again this week, pushing inflation beyond the current 5.4%–5.5% range. If this continues, inflation could even reach 7%,” Weerasinghe said.

The Governor explained that the Central Bank tightened monetary policy last week to moderate demand over the next three months and prevent further inflationary pressure. 

“Through that, in the next three months, demand will be somewhat moderated. Reducing demand to prevent inflation from rising further is very important for the country,” he said.  (Newswire)

The Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) headline inflation (year-on-year) accelerated further in October 2025, indicating continued convergence towards the inflation target. 

According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, headline inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 2.1% in October 2025 from 1.5% in September 2025, in line with the Central Bank’s near-term projections.

Food inflation (Y-o-Y) accelerated further to 3.5% in October 2025 from 2.9% recorded in September 2025, while Non-Food inflation (Y-o-Y) rose to 1.4% in October 2025 from 0.7% recorded in September 2025.

On a month-on-month basis, the CCPI increased marginally by 0.07% in October 2025, with the Food category contributing -0.03 percentage points and the Non-Food category contributing 0.10 percentage points.
