Sri Lanka is hosting the 69th World Congress of the International Police Association (IPA), marking the first time the international event is being held in an Asian country.

The Congress officially commenced in Colombo today (21), with Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath attending as the Chief Guest.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya, who also serves as President of the IPA Sri Lanka Section, was also present at the event.

The Congress, held from October 20 to 25, brings together more than 400 delegates representing 69 countries, providing a platform to strengthen international cooperation and cultural exchange.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Herath highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing cross-border crime, organised criminal networks and emerging challenges in law enforcement.

He also welcomed the foreign delegates to Sri Lanka and encouraged them to experience the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and hospitality during their stay.

The International Police Association is a non-governmental organisation with more than 600,000 members worldwide, promoting professional, social and cultural cooperation among serving and retired police officers.

The organisation operates under the motto “Servo per Amikeco”, meaning “Service Through Friendship”, and is currently headed by World President Martin Hoffmann.

Following the Congress, the IPA Friendship Week will be held from October 25 to 31, featuring tours across Sri Lanka to introduce international delegates to the country’s historical sites, cultural attractions, natural landscapes, local cuisine and traditions. (Newswire)
