Sri Lankan Police have announced that Interpol Red Notices have been issued to track down 103 criminals who have sought refuge overseas, it was reported.

Police Spokesman ASP F. U. Wootler confirmed that three fugitives have already been returned to the country this year. 

He added that authorities have also confiscated assets worth Rs. 50 million belonging to offenders who fled overseas, as part of ongoing efforts to curb transnational crime. (Newswire)

Authorities have confirmed that 15 out of 82 Sri Lankan fugitives wanted under INTERPOL Red Notices, including for murder and other serious crimes, are currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it was reported. 

State newspaper Dinamina reported, citing a senior police official, that UAE security agencies have notified INTERPOL of the presence of these individuals and are reportedly monitoring them closely.

Among them is Lalith Kannangara, a notorious drug trafficker linked to organized crime, who was arrested by Dubai Police in October. Although efforts were made to extradite him to Sri Lanka, he has since filed an appeal with the UAE Supreme Court, delaying the process.

A senior police official stated that the legal proceedings could take at least four months to conclude. A Sri Lankan legal representative has already traveled to Dubai to assist with the case, he added. (Newswire)

Three suspects, wanted in connection with multiple crimes committed in the country, extradited from Dubai today, Police said.

The suspects were arrested in Dubai and were escorted by a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

International Red Notices have been issued to 43 members of criminal gangs operating in Sri Lanka, according to the Police.

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that measures are being taken to obtain Red Notices against other identified and wanted criminals as well.

He further said that the wanted criminals who had sought refuge in Dubai, UAE are said to have now fled to other countries.

DIG Thalduwa said that following the issuance of red notices, wanted criminals who had fled to Dubai were found to have created new passports under fake identities and fled to other countries.

Forty-two (42) Red Notices have been issued for wanted criminals who have currently fled Sri Lanka, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon said. 

Acting IGP Tennakoon said that the suspects are wanted for underworld and drug-related crimes.

He further said that INTERPOL assistance will be obtained to repatriate these wanted criminals. 

The Acting IGP made the remarks to the media after declaring open a new Police checkpoint near the National Hospital in Colombo. 

The Sri Lankan Law enforcement authorities have commenced tracking down wanted criminals.

As part of the operations, the main accomplice of underworld member Salindu Malshika alias ‘Kudu Salindu’ was brought to Sri Lanka from Dubai this morning.

Commenting on the apprehension, Acting IGP Tennakoon said that measures are being taken to interrogate the suspect on drug operations related to Sri Lanka. 

He also revealed that steps are being taken to bring down the Police officer who had assisted druglord Nadun Chinthaka alias Harak Kata’s failed attempt to escape from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Acting IGP Tennakoon said the assistance of INTERPOL would be obtained for this purpose. (NewsWire)
