Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa has revealed plans for the development of both human and physical resources at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the main and only teaching hospital in the Northern Province.

During a special inspection of the hospital on Saturday (12), it was also revealed that rapid development programs are underway to enhance hospital infrastructure and service quality under the minister’s direction.

According to the Health Ministry, the minister’s visit aimed to strengthen healthcare services and provide quality, efficient medical care to residents of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts. 

During the visit, Minister Jayatissa inspected various departments, including Outpatients, Surgical Units, Inpatient Wards, Emergency Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, CT Scan Unit, Urological Surgery Wards, and the hospital’s treatment and development projects.

Guidance was also offered to doctors, specialists, nurses, and administrative staff to improve service delivery, while staff members also had the opportunity to raise current challenges and suggestions.

Minister Nalinda Jayatissa further emphasized that ensuring complete treatment and recovery of patients is the responsibility of everyone in the healthcare system, from the lowest-level worker to the minister. A detailed discussion was later held with the hospital administration and staff. 

The hospital provides healthcare across five districts, conducts over 20,000 obstetric procedures and over 5,500 deliveries annually. It performs more than 22,000 minor surgeries and 13,000 major surgeries each year, supported by a state-of-the-art laboratory.

The inspection was attended by Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, local MPs Dr. S. Sribhavantharaja and Karunanandan Elankumaran, Director Dr. T. Sathyamoorthy, Deputy Directors Dr. C.S. Jamunanathan and T. Kuhathasan, political representatives, medical specialists, nurses, and committee members. (Newswire)

The death toll due to an unidentified fever spreading in Jaffna has risen to five (05), Jaffna Hospital Director Dr. Sathyamoorthy said.

Addressing the media yesterday, Dr. Sathyamoorthy revealed that the deaths were caused due to fever and respiratory complications.

He further said that the deceased were aged between 20 and 65 years. 

Dr. Sathyamoorthy added that as the disease is suspected to be leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever, blood samples have been sent to Colombo to confirm the diagnosis. 

Meanwhile, the Health Promotion Bureau has also launched a probe into the unidentified disease.

Addressing the media yesterday, Dr. Kumudu Weerakoon from the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health said detailed investigations are underway to identify the exact nature of the disease.

Dr. Weerakoon further said that the authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with measures being taken to contain the spread of the illness. (Newswire)

An individual who had entered the Jaffna Hospital lobby on a motorcycle and had behaved in an unruly manner has been arrested by the Police, it was reported.

The man had behaved in an unruly manner after having brought an injured person to the hospital.

CCTV footage shows the man arguing with hospital staff at the reception counter and also injuring a staff member by dropping a printer on his head.

The man is later seen leaving along with his motorcycle.
