Opposition MP Jeevan Thondaman has expressed hope that actor‑turned‑politician C. Joseph Vijay, projected to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, will address several issues linked to Sri Lanka.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday (06), Thondaman extended his congratulations to Vijay on his recent victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.

“Given a similar transition in Sri Lanka, maybe this is also an opportunity for Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu to move toward a new chapter with greater understanding, reconciliation and a better narrative about each other built on respect, trust and people‑to‑people ties,” he said.

Thondaman further expressed hope that if elected Chief Minister, Vijay would assist in addressing issues facing Sri Lankans living in camps in Tamil Nadu, the fishermen conflict related to Kachchatheevu, and Indian‑origin Tamils living in the upcountry.

“The fishermen conflict is not between fishermen and the military, but between fishermen of Sri Lanka and India. It is a long‑standing dispute which is yet to be resolved. I expect he will visit Sri Lanka once elected Chief Minister. I hope we can move toward a new relationship and obtain solutions to the issues,” he added

MP Thondaman also said he hopes the new Tamil Nadu government will provide the rightful identity to the hill‑country Tamils in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)

The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) have raised concerns over the government’s reported move to abolish the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA).

TPA Leader, MP Mano Ganesan, has raised concerns over the government’s reported move to abolish the NEVIDA, commonly referred to as the Malaiyaha Authority, and convert it into a division under a Ministry

In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP Mano Ganesan pointed out that the NEVIDA was established at the initiative of his party with the active participation of the Malaiyaha civil society, under Act #32 of 2018 during the Good Governance government.

Stating that it is understood that the government intends to hand over the activities of this Authority under the purview of a Ministry, MP Ganesan urged the President to reconsider this course of action.

MP Ganesan further pointed out that such an effort cannot be sustained by a single Ministry and that the multifaceted nature of these challenges demands a coordinating body that draws together the work of several Ministries and ensures continuity beyond political transitions.

“I must therefore, with respect but with equal firmness, urge your government to desist from this attempt. The preservation of the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA) is not merely an administrative matter; it is a question of justice, equity, and the fulfilment of a historic responsibility toward a long-marginalized community under the globally accepted affirmative policy. I trust you will give this matter your most serious consideration and act in the best interests of the Malaiyaha Tamil community and the nation,” he added.

Also raising concerns over the matter, General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), Jeevan Thondaman, said the move to repeal the New Village Development Authority is completely unacceptable.

Issuing a statement, Thondaman said it has served as a vital mechanism to provide services to the plantation community.

“Similarly, by utilizing the Plantation Human Development Trust, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress used its political strength to hold plantation companies accountable and ensure that essential services and development projects reached the people. When it comes to the Plantation Human Development Trust, it functions merely as a tool of the plantation companies, it is not a people’s mechanism. That is why the Good Governance Government brought in the Plantation Human Development Trust: to directly and independently deliver services to the plantation people,” he said.

He pointed out that even for building a house, plantation workers must seek permission from estate managers, but through the New Village Development Authority, they have been able to secure practical solutions to such pressing issues.

“The Trust has also made it possible to deal directly with matters such as land ownership and housing approvals. Like the Urban Development Authority or the Road Development Authority, the village Development Authority was intended to function independently. Therefore, the government’s decision to close it down on the grounds that it is not functioning effectively is nothing but absurd,” he added.

  • The full letter of MP Mano Ganesan to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake;

Subject: Attempt to abolish the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA) established under Act #32 of 2018 and convert it into a division under a Ministry

I write to you with utmost urgency and respect regarding the government’s reported move to abolish the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA) —commonly referred to by our community as the Malaiyaha Authority—which was established at initiative of our party with the active participation of Malaiyaha civil society, under Act #32 of 2018 during the Good Governance government.

It is understood that the intention of your government is to hand over the activities of this Authority under the purview of a Ministry.

Mr. President, I earnestly urge you to reconsider this course of action.

As you are aware, the Malaiyaha Tamil community, residing in the plantation regions of Nuwara Eliya, Colombo (Avissawella), Kandy, Matale, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Badulla, Monaragala, Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala districts has for over two centuries endured systemic social, economic, and cultural marginalization.

This prolonged disadvantage is rooted in historical exclusion, whereby the community was denied land ownership, housing, access to services of the public administration, national education and healthcare, as well as citizenship and voting rights.

It was only gradually—schools were incorporated into the national system as late as 1976, and last segment of this community obtained full citizenship only in 2003—that the community began to emerge from this long history of exclusion.

Consequently, our people entered the national development process significantly late, which explains why they remain among the most disadvantaged groups in the country today.

Recognizing this reality, acknowledging the need for targeted and sustained interventions, between 2015 and 2019, during the Good Governance government, we, the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) worked to advance long-overdue rights—land and housing rights and entitlements, rights to education and healthcare, improved livelihood with fair incomes and wages, Empowerment of Malaiyaha youth and women and poverty alleviation. Crucially, these initiatives aimed to integrate the Malaiyaha Tamil community into the national mainstream.

Such an effort cannot be sustained by a single Ministry. The multifaceted nature of these challenges demands a coordinating body that draws together the work of several Ministries and ensures continuity beyond political transitions.

It was precisely to meet this need—and to institutionalize an affirmative policy framework—we of the TPA worked tirelessly, that Parliament, through Act #32 of 2018, established the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA).

To now dissolve this Authority and reduce it to a division under a Ministry would be a grave historical error. Unlike statutory bodies created through legislation, Ministries and their internal sections and divisions are subject to administrative changes and may be dissolved or restructured at the discretion of the Executive.

The Authority, by contrast, derives its legitimacy and permanence from Parliament under relevant act, in this case Act No. 32 of 2018, and therefore guarantees continuity of service to the community irrespective of changes in government.

Mr. President, as you mark one year in office this month, allow me first to extend my congratulations. You have made significant commitments to the Malaiyaha Tamil people. However, it must be noted with regret that in this past year, the community has yet to witness tangible progress in the fulfillment of those promises. More concerning still, the present move threatens to dismantle one of the few institutional gains already secured.

I must therefore, with respect but with equal firmness, urge your government to desist from this attempt. The preservation of the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region (NEVIDA) is not merely an administrative matter; it is a question of justice, equity, and the fulfillment of a historic responsibility toward a long-marginalized community under the globally accepted affirmative policy.

I trust you will give this matter your most serious consideration and act in the best interests of the Malaiyaha Tamil community and the nation.

  • The full statement of Jeevan Thondaman:

“The New village Development Authority was introduced by the Good Governance Government, and we welcomed it at that time. It has served as a vital mechanism to provide services to the plantation community.

Similarly, by utilizing the Plantation Human Development Trust, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress used its political strength to hold plantation companies accountable and ensure that essential services and development projects reached the people.

However, after the Ceylon Workers’ Congress moved to the Opposition, plantation companies have only strengthened their authority and dominance.

When it comes to the Plantation Human Development Trust, it functions merely as a tool of the plantation companies, it is not a people’s mechanism. That is why the Good Governance Government brought in the Plantation Human Development Trust: to directly and independently deliver services to the plantation people.

To illustrate, even for building a house, plantation workers must seek permission from estate managers. But through the New Village Development Authority, they have been able to secure practical solutions to such pressing issues.

Moreover, through our trade union strength, we have negotiated with plantation companies and enabled housing for the people. But if the present government has achieved even 10 percent of this, it remains highly questionable!

The Trust has also made it possible to deal directly with matters such as landownership and housing approvals. Like the Urban Development Authority or the Road Development Authority, the village Development Authority was intended to function independently.

Therefore, the government’s decision to close it down on the grounds that it is not functioning effectively is nothing but absurd.

Furthermore, it is clear that the President himself does not understand the true power and role of the village Development Authority. This lack of awareness has led to attempts to reduce it into just a department under a ministry. But it must be emphasized that the Trust is not like any other institution.

Deputy Ministers and up country ruling party representatives should be ashamed of themselves. The plantation people voted for them with immense trust and sent them to Parliament. Yet, when it comes to solving issues or giving answers, they prove to be incompetent, spineless, and indifferent.

They criticized us heavily on the issue of plantation wages. But today, these ruling party representatives of the up country are unable to secure even a single rupee increase for the people.

At present, there is not a single Cabinet Minister representing the hill country within the ruling party. In such a context, the move to abolish the Plantation Human Development Trust is unacceptable and entirely wrong.

Eliminating institutions under the guise of cost-cutting and saving is not justifiable. For example, we cannot simply abolish the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Among the youth today, there is rising frustration, and their concerns are legitimate. Instead of addressing them, the government is exploiting these frustrations as a weapon, destabilizing the nation further.

Finally, I would like to state Deputy Minister Sundaralingam Pradeep truly has any concern or sense of duty toward the plantation community, then he must publicly release a statement opposing the move to abolish the New Villages Development Authority.” (Newswire)

Former Minister Jeevan Thondaman has called on Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara to issue an apology over his recent statement in Parliament regarding former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Addressing Parliament today, MP Jeevan Thondaman mentioned the Justice Minister’s statement referring to the former president as a thief and a beggar.

“Today all of you have been voted in and are sitting in your seats because people wanted a change. People wanted a change not just in terms of administration, but also in terms of political culture,” he said.

Stating that it was irrational to call someone who had saved the nation a thief and a beggar, MP Thondaman condemned the Justice Minister’s statement, saying he must issue an apology.

The former minister also called out the government for disclosing lists with names related to corruption, instead of taking action.

“If something has been done illegally then take action. If it is not illegal then what is the point of showing a list and just parading it around,” he questioned. (Newswire)

Former Minister Jeevan Thondaman has urged the National Democratic Front (NDF) to consider former Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera for the remaining National List seat of the party, highlighting that the new Parliament requires experienced politicians in the opposition.

In a statement on ‘X’, Thondaman said considering the National Peoples’ Power (NPP) Government’s supermajority in Parliament, it was important that the opposition had Parliamentarians experienced in the ongoing reforms to hold the Government accountable.

“I hope that the remaining National List seat of the New Democratic Front is given to Kanchana Wijesekera, who led the most ambitious and difficult reforms in the energy sector in our country’s history. He set the stage for competition, transparent pricing and accountability in our energy sector. He did all of this knowing that the political outcome of his decisions would not be good for him. Kanchana risked his electoral prospects so that the ultimate winner of his reforms would be the Sri Lankan consumer,” Thondaman said.

The former Minister further highlighted that due to Kanchana Wijesekera’s efforts, today, Sri Lankans are no longer beholden to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) or the Lanka Indian Oil Company (IOC) PLC when buying fuel.

Jeevan Thondaman also pointed out that likewise, if the authorities follow through with Wijesekera’s reforms in the Electricity Act, Sri Lankans won’t be entrapped by the high prices and frequent power cuts of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) either.

Former Minister Thondaman emphasized that like telecoms and fuel, Sri Lankans deserve the right to choose their energy provider and to be free from monopolies. (Newswire)

Minister Jeevan Thondaman has responded to criticism regarding the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) support for Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the 2019 presidential election, explaining the rationale behind their decision.

Taking to ‘X’, the minister also issued a stark warning against the populist promises of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, labelling him “Promise Premadasa.”

Thondaman’s remarks were aimed at dispelling accusations from the SJB in a national TV programme that the CWC’s backing of Rajapaksa was misguided. He reiterated that, at the time, Rajapaksa’s manifesto appeared to offer the best hope for economic growth and a more manageable tax burden. The CWC, representing a historically marginalised community, was particularly concerned with increasing daily wages to Rs. 1,000—an issue that companies resisted, citing the high tax environment.

“We supported GR’s 2019 manifesto as it was meant to accelerate economic growth and ease the burden on the public, including the tax cuts,” Thondaman wrote, addressing journalist Kusum Wijesinghe who is also a member of the SJB’s Youth Wing. “We believed his victory was the best option to protect the interests of the community.”

However, Minister Thondaman acknowledged that the subsequent economic crisis had been a turning point for his party. “When the economic crisis set in, we realised that populism doesn’t solve people’s problems,” he stated, referring to the broader lesson that social conservatism and exclusivist ideologies could not bring economic stability or progress.

The minister noted that the realisation of these economic missteps had prompted the CWC to re-evaluate their stance and align with President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s recovery-oriented policies. Under Wickremesinghe’s leadership, the government has focused on fiscal discipline and sustainable economic growth, a direction that Minister Thondaman suggests all political leaders should follow.

“We have realised that populist handouts only result in currency depreciation and inflation—the biggest tax of them all,” Minister Thondaman explained. He pointed to the country’s improving economic situation, highlighting a 0.9% inflation rate, $6 billion in reserves, a nearly 5% growth rate (double the IMF projection), and a reduced debt-to-GDP ratio as evidence of the success of Wickremesinghe’s economic policies.

Minister Thondaman’s most direct criticism was reserved for Sajith Premadasa, as he warned against Premadasa’s promises, suggesting that they would destabilise the country’s fragile recovery. “If Sajith Premadasa realises the dangers of his false, populist promises and admits that the economy is too fragile to play with, then he should withdraw his candidacy,” Thondaman argued. “He needs to back #RecoveryRanil and stop being #PromisePremadasa.”

The CWC’s shift in perspective—from supporting populist policies to embracing economic fundamentals—represents a broader political realignment in Sri Lanka. As the country navigates its economic recovery, Minister Thondaman’s message is clear: only sustainable, long-term strategies can ensure national prosperity. (Newswire)

The government is ready to face any situation if the estate companies take court action against the government’s decision to increase the wages of the estate workers’ community, Minister of Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman announced.

Minister Thondaman disclosed that previously, plantation companies which claimed an inability to augment the basic salary of workers even by a single rupee, have proposed a Rs.200 increase in the basic salary for estate workers following the government’s declaration of a daily wage of Rs.1700.

The minister emphasized that the companies have the ability to increase the wages of estate workers.

“In the wake of a severe economic crisis affecting the country, estate workers are one of the groups most affected. Continuing long-term suffering amid economic turmoil, their struggle revolves around the pivotal issue of wages.

“In response, the government has taken decisive action by officially mandating a daily wage of Rs.1700 for estate workers under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, through a gazette notification. It is now imperative for estate companies to adhere to this official judgment. Additionally, the government is prepared to confront any legal challenges from estate companies contesting the wage increase for plantation workers,” he said.

Minister Thondaman pointed out that the plantation companies previously claimed an inability to raise the basic salary of their workers even by a rupee, but upon the issuance of a government gazette notification setting the daily wage for plantation workers at Rs.1700, the same companies promptly augmented the basic salary by Rs.200. “This demonstrates their capacity to improve the wages of estate workers,” he said.

The minister further said that concurrently, the government is actively enhancing the estate community’s standard of living by addressing housing shortages among plantation workers, expanding educational and employment opportunities, and now, increasing salaries. This concerted effort undoubtedly serves our estate community well, providing tangible benefits to our people.

“However, as the election season nears, certain parties tend to make a slew of promises to our people. Among these pledges, some claim to transform estate workers into small estate owners. However, they often fail to elaborate on the mechanisms behind such proposals,” he added.

Minister Thondaman made these remarks while addressing a press briefing held at the President Media Centre on Monday (May 13).

Jeevan Thondaman, who is also the Minister of Water Supply, addressed the severe shortage of drinking water in the Jaffna peninsula.

The minister said the Jaffna peninsula has long struggled with a severe shortage of drinking water, necessitating urgent solutions.

“Currently, only 11% of the peninsula enjoys access to clean drinking water. However, with the ongoing construction of a desalination plant, nearly 40% of the Jaffna peninsula will soon have access to drinking water. This could be pointed out as a considerable development in addressing the issue of water scarcity,” he added. (Newswire)

Since taking office last year, Minister Thondaman has led several initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of historically marginalised communities, advocating for social justice, and spearheading reforms in the water sector to ensure access to safe and affordable drinking water for all Sri Lankans. His dedication to public service and his innovative approach to leadership have made a substantial impact at the national level and are now recognised on the global stage through this selection.

The YGL Community is a unique, multi-stakeholder community of more than 1,000 exceptional young leaders who share a commitment to shaping the global future. Being selected as a Young Global Leader is a testament to Minister Thondaman’s vision, leadership qualities, and his relentless pursuit of equality and sustainability.

The Ministry further congratulated Minister Thondaman on this achievement and supported his ongoing efforts to use this opportunity to further the nation’s development goals, encourage youth empowerment, and enhance Sri Lanka’s presence on the global stage.

“Minister Thondaman’s selection as a Young Global Leader underscores his role as a dynamic and progressive force in politics, both domestically and internationally. It highlights the potential for impactful leadership and the importance of collective efforts in building a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous future for all,” the ministry added.

Minister Thondaman’s inclusion in the Young Global Leaders programme comes as a recognition of his commitment to public service, focusing on improving living standards and advancing rights for marginalised communities in Sri Lanka.

The Young Global Leaders programme identifies promising leaders under 40 who are shaping the future. Past inductees include prominent figures like French President Emmanuel Macron, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Ali Baba founder and technology entrepreneur Jack Ma and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Commenting on his recognition, Minister Thondaman thanked the World Economic Forum and outlined his plans to use the platform to foster international collaboration and promote entrepreneurship, particularly among Sri Lanka’s youth.

“This recognition is not just a reflection of my journey, but it stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people of Sri Lanka. I am committed to leveraging this platform to foster greater international collaboration and drive forward our shared goals for sustainable development and equality,” Minister Thondaman said in a statement. Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman has extended his apologies to the Muslim community for the mandatory cremation policy enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic under the previous Government of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The apology came during an Ifthar gathering held in Hatton town on Tuesday (Apr 02), hosted by Minister Thondaman, during which he acknowledged the distress the policy had caused among the Muslim community.

Although having assumed duties in January last year, the minister said it was still important that as the present Minister responsible for water, to take responsibility irrespective of who was in his place before.

Minister Thondaman added that he will soon be submitting a Cabinet paper together with the findings of the study to seek a formal apology from the Government for the harm and hurt caused to especially the Muslim community by the forced cremation policy.

According to a statement from Minister Jeevan Thondaman’s Office, the forced creation policy under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was driven by concerns that the burial of COVID-19 victims could contaminate water supplies. This was despite several scientific opinions, including that of the World Health Organisation, refuting that claim.

The previous Government’s position has now been challenged and refuted by new scientific findings of a study led by experts from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and an update to it by the Joint Research and Demonstration Centre for Water Technology (JRDC) at the University of Peradeniya, a centre under the Ministry of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, he said. The update to the original study was done on the instructions of Minister Thondaman after becoming the subject Minister last year.

The first study, led by experts from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and financially supported by the Ministry of Water Supply, investigated the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in surface and wastewater across various locations in Sri Lanka. Conducted between August and December 2021, this research aimed to assess the risk of viral transmission through water, a concern that originally motivated the cremation mandate.

Complementing this, a comprehensive review study by the JRDC analysed the effects of COVID-19-infected bodies’ burial on groundwater contamination. Published this year (2024), this review concluded there was no risk to groundwater pollution from properly conducted burials during the pandemic. The study emphasised that proper burial procedures, including deep burial in sealed body bags, effectively mitigated any risk of environmental contamination.

The study also highlighted that the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in various water sources did not stem from burial practices but rather from the faeces and urine of infected individuals, further debunking the initial assumptions that underpinned the cremation policy.

Minister Thondaman’s apology marks a critical step towards healing the wounds inflicted by the pandemic’s divisive policies, reaffirming the Government’s dedication to evidence-based decision-making and respect for all cultural and religious practices in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

India has not sent any official communication yet on the Katchatheevu island issue, Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development of Sri Lanka Jeevan Thondaman told Indian media on Monday.

According to The Indian Express, Minister Thondaman said as far as Sri Lanka is concerned, Katchatheevu island falls within the Sri Lankan line of control.

“Narendra Modi’s foreign policy with Sri Lanka is organic and healthy. So far, there has not been an official communication from India to return the powers of Katchatheevu island. No such request from India so far. If there is such a communication, the foreign ministry will reply to that,” Minister Thondaman said.

Even as Minister Thondaman denied any communication yet from India, another Sri Lankan minister, who did not want to be named, told The Indian Express that national boundaries cannot be changed as per wishes of a new government.

“For good or bad, Katchatheevu was formally recognised inside Sri Lanka’s line of control. Once the boundary is decided, no one can demand a change just because of a change in government… But Katchatheevu hasn’t been a topic of discussion in the Sri Lankan Cabinet; there is no communication from India in this regard.

“If Katchatheevu is about the Tamil community, they exist on either side of the borders. If it is about the Tamil fishermen issue, linking both is inappropriate and inaccurate because the issue with regards to Indian fishermen is all about the bottom-trawlers they use for fishing outside Indian waters, which is illegal as per international maritime laws.

“When this huge exploitation and depletion of maritime resources happen in the entire ocean region, the victims of these trawlers owned by Indian Tamil fishermen are not Muslims or Sinhala fishermen but the Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen,” the minister said.

The comments come as PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scaled up its attack on the Congress, accusing it and the DMK of giving away the island, and the party’s Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai claiming that the Centre is taking all possible measures to reclaim the territory.

Sri Lanka’s response also comes on a day External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar added his weight to the BJP claims that the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi had given away the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka in 1974 and kept this “hidden” and Annamalai said the central government is taking all possible measures to reclaim the territory.

Speaking at a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Jaishankar, however, parried a question on whether the government plans to reclaim the island, saying the matter is in Supreme Court. “It is a sub-judice matter,” he said.

Later in the day, Annamalai told reporters in Chennai: “The ball is in the Centre’s court now. All solutions possible will be considered. The only aim of the BJP in this issue is to protect the safety of Tamil fishermen. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EAM Jaishankar are being very serious in this case. It (Katchatheevu) was handed over illegally to Sri Lanka.”

The last high-level discussions between India and Sri Lanka were held in New Delhi on March 28, just three days before the BJP brought up the issue, following a news report based on information accessed by Annamalai under the RTI Act.

A communication from the Sri Lankan President’s media division said after the talks that the delegation headed by Sagala Ratnayaka, senior adviser to the President on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff, had “discussions to assess bilateral economic connectivity projects between Sri Lanka and India”. Ratnayaka was unavailable for comment on Monday.

The revival of the Katchatheevu issue and the unprecedented interest in it shown by Delhi in the past two days have reignited speculation in Tamil Nadu that the BJP has a plan laid out for Katchatheevu before the Lok Sabha election day on April 19.

A senior state BJP leader said the island issue has been in the party’s radar since Annamalai’s much-hyped four-day visit to Sri Lanka in 2022. This visit was considered a significant outreach on behalf of the BJP leadership to address pending issues with Sri Lanka such as Katchatheevu and the attacks on Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.

The BJP leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said following Annamalai’s visit, the party leadership had a plan to come out with a significant announcement on Katchatheevu island before the end of the current Modi regime. “Of course it was an ambitious plan but it hasn’t materialized so far,” he said.

“Withdrawing a set of executive instructions from 1976 on the 1974 agreement was the strategy, but we are not sure of the efforts taken by Delhi in this regard. Even as retrieving the island is a near impossible idea, our request to Delhi was to restore the traditional rights of Indian vessels in the area as it would have been a huge gain for the BJP Tamil Nadu unit,” the leader said. Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman has assured that there are no plans to increase water tariffs this year.

Minister Thondaman highlighted that the implementation of any proposed water pricing formula would be executed in a manner sensitive to the well-being of the populace, ensuring minimal distress.

“We anticipate no increase in water tariffs for the current year. While we have completed the groundwork for the water tariff formula slated for introduction last year, we are currently reviewing its specifics. We aim to avoid burdening the public unnecessarily with the water tariff formula,” he explained.

He made these remarks while addressing various facets such as housing, land, education, health, and infrastructure during a press conference held at the Presidential Media Center on Monday (Feb 26).

Commenting on the issues faced by the upcountry Tamil community, Minister Thondaman emphasized that addressing the challenges encountered by the upcountry Tamil community should extend beyond mere daily wages.

Minister Thondaman remarked on the unnecessary nature of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed by certain political parties, purportedly aimed at resolving the issues faced by the upcountry Tamil populace, stressing that genuine solutions to these issues do not necessitate MoUs.

The full statement of Minister Jeevan Thondaman;

“We anticipate no increase in water tariffs for the current year. While we have completed the groundwork for the water tariff formula slated for introduction last year, we are currently reviewing its specifics. Our aim is to avoid burdening the public unnecessarily with the water tariff formula.

Certain political entities have entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) regarding the issues faced by the upcountry Tamil community. However, MoUs are not required to address the genuine concerns of the upcountry Tamil populace. The upcountry Tamil community has long witnessed such symbolic gestures; what is imperative now is tangible action. We are committed to this cause.

Contrary to some political leaders’ assertions that the sole concern of Tamil plantation workers is their daily wage of Rs. 1500.00, I refuse to belittle my people in such a manner. President Ranil Wickremesinghe advocates for a unified approach, transcending political affiliations, to address the challenges faced by minorities. I share this stance wholeheartedly. Our collective focus should be on the holistic development of the community.

Despite President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s repeated calls for unity in this regard, regrettably, many individuals remain entrenched within narrow political confines.

In 2015, a plan was set forth to construct a total of 24,000 homes for the upcountry Tamil community, comprising 14,000 units funded through Indian assistance and 10,000 units allocated by the Sri Lankan Government. However, by 2022, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing economic challenges led to the cessation of construction on these homes. By that time, only 1560 houses had been completed by the Sri Lankan Government. The initiation of a new project for 10,000 houses became possible as the prior 4,000-house project, facilitated by the Government of India, reached completion.

Beyond housing, the imperative of securing land rights for these communities is recognized. The upcountry Tamils have long grappled with a myriad of unresolved issues, spanning housing, land tenure, education, healthcare, and infrastructure deficiencies. Both President Ranil Wickremesinghe and I align in the belief that sustainable resolutions are imperative. Accordingly, concerted efforts are underway to address these challenges comprehensively.” (NewsWire)

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has condemned the statement made by Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Spokesman Noel Priyantha, claiming that electricity was not a must for children to study, as an oil lamp was sufficient.

Noel Priyantha made the statement during a talk show with a local media channel recently, which had been in response to a question on the difficulties faced by children from the estate sector due to the disconnection of power supply due to unsettled bills.

Commenting on the matter, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said the CEB Spokesman has tendered his resignation from the post and has also issued a public apology for his statement.

Taking to ‘X’, the minister further said that the CEB management will also take appropriate steps regarding the statement made.

Stating that the statement does not reflect the views of the government or the CEB, Minister Wijesekera extended his apology on behalf of the Ministry and the CEB.

“I agree with the sentiments of @JeevanThondaman and many more that had raised the lack of empathy and professionalism in the statement made by the CEB spokesperson,” he added.

His comments come in response to a statement shared on ‘X’ by Minister of Estate Infrastructure Development and Water Supply Jeevan Thondaman on the matter.

In his statement, Minister Thondaman highlighted that the ‘entire’ statement made by the CEB spokesperson lacked empathy and was unacceptable.

“I trust that @kanchana_wij will take necessary steps to address this as I do not believe that the Hon. Minister shares the same view as the official,” he added. (NewsWire)

Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman has issued a clarification over the recent ‘National Thai Pongal’ Festival held in Hatton with the participation of several South Indian actresses.

The event held on Sunday (Jan 21) was jointly organized by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, and the Norwood Divisional Secretariat.

However, queries had been raised on social media on the expenses borne for the event, with the public pointing out that the event had been organized by multiple state institutions at a time when the country was facing economic difficulties.

Responding to the queries, taking to ‘X’, Minister Thondaman said he wishes to address concerns circulating about the costs associated with the National Thai Pongal festival, as he was one of the Ministers overseeing this celebration.

In a 9-point statement, Minister Jeevan Thondaman issued the following clarification;

  1. The National Thai Pongal festival was organised jointly by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, and the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs.
  2. This year’s festival was held in Hatton for the first time. The choice of Hatton was in recognition and commemoration of the 200-year legacy of the Indian-origin Tamil plantation community. I am proud that we were able to host a national event in the heartland of the plantation community.
  3. Thai Pongal is a day when we honour the culture, arts, and history of the Tamil community, which comprises nearly 20% of Sri Lanka’s population. This festival was realised with a modest allocation from the Ministries and Departments involved and relied on the kind contributions of Sri Lanka’s business community and traders to ensure its success. Contrary to some of the narratives being circulated, the monies spent represent a fraction of the cost typically associated with national festivals and state funds were kept to a minimum.
  4. This festival was not designed to be a display of extravagance. Unlike other national religious and cultural events that span multiple days and feature elaborate decorations and lighting, the National Thai Pongal festival was a single, half-day event, held at a local playground and focused on cultural richness rather than costly flair. The local community worked closely with us, contributing to the event’s success, and ensuring that the celebration was both authentic and cost-effective.
  5. The presence of four distinguished and award-winning South Indian actresses was not a frivolous decision but intended to inspire and empower. Their visit was facilitated by my personal invitation due to my longstanding ties with Tamil Nadu. Their decision to come to Sri Lanka was also a gesture of their goodwill towards the people of Sri Lanka, particularly the Tamil community of Indian origin. During their speeches, they shared their stories of overcoming adversity to achieve success in their respective fields. Their addresses touched on critical issues such as the importance of education, women’s empowerment, and the necessity of keeping children in school to secure a better future.
  6. These South Indian stars did not only participate for their cultural resonance but also to promote our tourism sector. Their visit brought into focus the warmth and vibrancy of our culture and captured the attention of potential tourists from India and beyond. As we recover and revitalise our tourism sector, the festival, telecasted locally and internationally, has projected a positive image, inviting the world to our island.
  7. It saddens me that the integrity of these artists and the festival itself is being questioned. It is even more disconcerting to witness a gendered critique, where the contributions of female icons are undervalued. It is an unfortunate reflection of a double standard that pervades our society.
  8. As we strive to improve the daily lives of all our citizens, and while we understand that these improvements will not happen overnight, it is crucial to recognise that cultural celebration is intertwined with the social and economic upliftment of our communities.
  9. The National Thai Pongal festival was not merely a half-day of festivity but a powerful affirmation of our government’s commitment to celebrating and uplifting all segments of our society. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every Sri Lankan, regardless of ethnic or religious background, can proudly share and celebrate their heritage and I am committed to ensuring that. The ongoing discussions surrounding the formulation of a water tariff focusses on the need for a formula that sustains the water board while maintaining fairness for the general public, Minister of Water Supply Jeevan Thondaman said.

Minister Thondaman further said with the major domestic category comprising 75% and Samurdhi at 1.58%, the government aims to prioritize these sectors over industries, albeit without pressuring them.

Addressing a media briefing on Monday (Nov 27), Minister Thondaman said discussions are still in progress, considering two parallel formulas—one focused on cost recovery and the other on cost reflection.

“The final draft of the tariff formula is expected in December, with a commitment to avoiding unnecessary burden on the public. There is a possibility of an increased tariff rate for commercial institutions, with an emphasis on ensuring fair rates for charitable institutions, hospitals and schools.

“To further deliberate on these crucial decisions, a meeting has been requested with Ministers Dilum Amunugama and Shehan Semasinghe. The outcome of these discussions will be communicated, leading to a vote on the proposed tariff,” he said.

Acknowledging that the economic crisis was affecting both foreign-funded and domestic-funded projects, the minister assured the public that new projects would kick-start in January, with a focus on completing existing projects.

Stating that the government plans to engage in public-private partnerships to enhance water quality and reduce costs, he clarified that while projects would involve private participation, there is no intention to sell or privatize water.

Minister Thondaman pointed out operational losses, citing increased electricity prices and existing debt as contributing factors, highlighting a silver lining—the reduction in water usage due to conservation efforts following a tariff hike.

The minister also stressed the importance of a sustainable tariff formula that considers debt servicing and CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) but does not overburden the public.

Minister Thondaman discussed the government’s commitment to efficient water conservation, especially in areas with inadequate access to clean water, revealing plans for a desalination plant in Jaffna and efforts to prioritize water supply from villages and estates.

The Minister also emphasized the streamlining of the water resources management policy to implement a comprehensive water management plan.

He refuted accusations of politicization within the Water Board and clarified the appointment process for key positions, assuring that revenue for the Water Board has increased, while further discussing plans to explore renewable energy sources to reduce energy costs.

As the government works towards a stable tariff formula and sustainable water management, the Minister urged the public to understand the value of water and the necessity for a balanced approach to tariff reform.

Minister Thondaman reiterated the commitment to providing clean and accessible water to all citizens while ensuring financial viability in the water sector. “The proposed reforms aim to strike a balance between the needs of the public and the economic realities faced by the water sector,” he added. The Ministry of Water Supply will take measures to address the impact of the ongoing drought in several districts, Minister of Water Supply Jeevan Thondaman stated.

Taking to ‘X’, the minister stated that the steps are being taken together with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Department of National Community Water Supply.

“In order to address the impact of the ongoing drought in several districts, my Ministry together with the @NwsdbOfficial, and the Department of National Community Water Supply, will be visiting drought-affected districts in the coming weeks,” he said.

Stating that the goal of the initiative is to gain firsthand insights, understand district-specific challenges, and work together to find swift solutions, Minister Thondaman added that an official schedule will be published soon.

“In this critical time, your input is invaluable. Please share with me in the comments section how the drought is affecting the water supply in your town or district. Your insights will aid our understanding and response strategy better,” he requested from the public.

Minister Thondaman pointed out that while responding to this drought, each individual can play a vital role in conserving water.

The minister has made a five-point suggestion to the public to help conserve water. The suggestions are as follows;

  1. Fix Leaks : Check and repair any leaks in your home, as even small drips can add up over time.
  2. Shorter Showers: Aim for shorter showers to save water. Every minute counts.
  3. Collect  Rainwater : Utilise rain barrels or containers to collect rainwater for non-drinking purposes like gardening. Avoid unnecessary watering.
  4. Turn Off Taps : While brushing teeth, washing hands or dishes, turn off the tap when not in use.
  5. Spread Awareness: Educate friends and family about water conservation and inspire them to take action too.

“By collectively embracing these practices, we can alleviate the strain on our water resources and ensure a more consistent water supply during this challenging period. I thank everyone for their patience and support,” Minister Thondaman added. (NewsWire)
