Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting and murder of a youth in Kahawatte on 30th June.

According to the Police, a jeep, a car, and three motorcycles used in the crime were recovered.

The arrests were made following a joint investigation by the Colombo North Crimes Division and the Police Special Task Force.

The Police said the jeep used in the murder had reportedly been repainted, and fake license plates were found on the other vehicles, while they were discovered parked at a house in Homagama.

One of the suspects was found in possession of 197 grams of heroin and 100 grams of ICE.

Police revealed that the murder had been orchestrated by an organized criminal residing in Dubai.

On 30th June, an armed group posing as police officers arrived at a house in the Andana, Koskella area and abducted two youths using handcuffs.

The duo were taken in a jeep to a remote location in Koskella, where they were shot. 

A 22-year-old boy was killed on the spot, while his 27-year-old friend sustained injuries. (Newswire)

Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler says the possession or use of handcuffs by any unauthorised individual is illegal and is a criminal offence.

According to the state newspaper Silumina, ASP Wootler clarified that the lawful use and possession of authorized handcuffs is restricted to officers affiliated with institutions tasked with upholding law and order.

He further said that the production of handcuffs, for any purpose, is banned unless conducted under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Defence at the national level.

The Police Spokesman made the remarks in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old youth in Kahawatte recently. The man was handcuffed, abducted and later found shot dead.

A tense situation has been reported following the funeral of the youth who was found shot dead in Kahawatte this week.

It is reported that a tense situation arose between the area residents and the Police after the crowd had arrived outside the residence of an individual in the area, accused of having allegedly orchestrated the murder. 

The Police have fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and contain the situation.

The 22-year-old youth was shot dead, and a 27-year-old man was injured in the shooting reported in the Kahawatta area on Monday. 

Police investigations revealed that four unidentified individuals had visited a house in the Koskaella area, claiming to be Police, and had abducted the two young men. 

The Police said the victims had later been taken to a deserted location, where they were shot, during which one person succumbed to injuries at the scene. (Newswire)

A Blue Sapphire retrieved from a mine in the Kattange area in Kahawatte last week has been sold for a record Rs. 430 million at an auction held recently.

According to Ada Newspaper, representatives of the Gem and Jewellery Authority have certified the gemstone as a 99-carat Blue Sapphire.

The Blue Sapphire was auctioned in the Kahawatte area during which several gem businessmen from Ratnapura had participated.

A gem businessman from Kahawatte had initially placed a bid for Rs. 470 million but had requested it for Rs. 60 million less during the auction.

As a result, the gemstone had been sold to a gem businessman from Pelmadulla who had placed the next highest bid. (NewsWire)
