The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has launched a special investigation into a tense situation that arose between Air Force personnel and Police officers during a bomb disposal exercise at the Kalpitiya firing range on June 17, 2026.

The Air Force Commander has appointed a special investigation board to conduct an inquiry and submit a report on the incident, which unfolded when three individuals entered the restricted security zone of the firing range without prior permission or notification.

According to the SLAF, seven Air Force members on duty and one Police Special Task Force (STF) officer questioned the three civilians about their identity. 

It was later confirmed that one of them was a Police officer, accompanied by two civilians. During the questioning, a tense exchange developed between the two sides.

In a statement, the SLAF noted that the firing range had been designated a restricted security zone during the exercise, with responsibility for the safety of all persons in the area resting with the Air Force. 

Necessary security measures were followed to ensure personal safety and prevent risks, the SLAF said.

The appointed investigation board is expected to review the circumstances and provide a detailed report on the incident. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Navy has seized 02 boats with about 38 kilos of Kerala cannabis, with a street value exceeding Rs. 08 million, during a search operation conducted in the Uchchamunai Lagoon in Kalpitiya yesterday (04).

The boats were seized following a search operation mounted by deploying a naval craft in the Uchchamunai coastal vicinity by SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command.

According to the Navy, the boats loaded with 18 parcels of Kerala cannabis, weighing approximately 38 kilos, were taken into naval custody.

Two suspects have been arrested on suspicion of transporting donkeys with the intention of selling them mixed with Beef meat.

According to the Police, the men had transported six donkeys in two lorries from Kandakuliya in Kalpitiya to Badalgama.

Sri Lanka Police have sought public assistance to apprehend five suspects wanted over the robbery of 37 kilos of gold in Kalpitiya. 

The Police said the suspects were wanted for abducting an individual and stealing 37 kilos of Gold in the Kalpitiya area in November last year.

The five suspects who have been named by the Kalpitiya Magistrate’s Court are said to have fled their residences.

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kalpitiya Police Station has been presented before the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court on allegations of allegedly sexually abusing a female Police Constable. 

The Police said the suspect OIC had appeared before the court on Tuesday (Feb 13) via his lawyer, who had filed a motion in court. 

The Justice released the OIC on a surety of Rs. 500,000 and also ordered the OIC to report to the Office of Senior Superintendent of Police in Kuliyapitiya on every last Sunday of the month.

The case has been fixed for March 06, 2024, while the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Police in Kuliyapitiya is conducting further investigations. (NewsWire)

Two Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) officers were caught in an explosion at the Air Force training facility in Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya yesterday while patrolling the area on foot, the Police stated. 

The Police stated that the explosion had occurred at the firing range of the Air Force training facility last evening (Sep 26).

A 28-year-old Airman from Polgahawela had succumbed to injuries at the Kalpitiya Hospital. It is reported that another Airman who sustained injuries in the explosion has been hospitalized. 

The Police stated that the cause for the explosion and details surrounding the incident are unknown yet.

A massive rescue operation is underway to save a group of pilot whales that had beached on the shores of Kalpitiya.

According to reports, three pilot whales are reported to have died, while 11 are stranded.
