The Irrigation Department has issued a minor flood warning for low-lying areas of the Kalu Ganga Basin in the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts, following significant rainfall in the catchment areas.

According to the Department, a minor flood situation is likely to develop in low-lying areas of the Kalu Ganga floodplain within the next 24 hours, based on the prevailing rainfall conditions and water levels recorded at river gauging stations.

The warning, which remains valid until 11.30 a.m. tomorrow (27), applies to the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions:

  • Ratnapura District: Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama and Elapatha.
  • Kalutara District: Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palindanuwara.

Residents in the affected areas and motorists travelling through these locations have been advised to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The Irrigation Department has also requested disaster management authorities to take appropriate precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, the Department announced that the spill gates of the Inginimitiya Reservoir, located in the Mee Oya River Basin, will be opened to control the increasing water inflow.

Accordingly, water is expected to be released into Mee Oya at a rate of 1,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) by 1.00 p.m. today (26).

Residents living downstream of the reservoir and along both sides of Mee Oya have been advised to remain alert to changes in river water levels and follow instructions issued by the Irrigation Department and disaster management authorities. (Newswire)
