The Attorney General’s Department informed court that a WHO-accredited German laboratory found dangerous bacterial-contaminated water in a stock of Human Immunoglobulin imported to Sri Lanka, while a batch of the cancer drug Rituximab contained only saline solution, Newsfirst reported.

Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama told the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court that the test results confirmed both medicines contained substances harmful to human health.

The Human Immunoglobulin drug lacked therapeutic components and instead consisted of water contaminated with bacteria. Rituximab contained no cancer-treating proteins and was made up solely of sodium chloride.

Girihagama said the Government of Sri Lanka spent Rs. 144.74 million on the procurement based on a Cabinet paper submitted by the eighth suspect, former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. (Newswire)

Chamithri Rambukwella, Amali Rambukwella, and Amali’s husband, Isuru Pulasthi Bandara Polgasdeniya, were taken into custody after providing statements to the Bribery Commission regarding an ongoing investigation into their assets.

Authorities are examining assets exceeding Rs. 134 million, including houses valued at Rs. 40 million and a Mercedes-Benz worth Rs. 20 million. Additionally, approximately 40 bank and insurance accounts linked to the investigation have been frozen.

Former minister Rambukwella, his wife Kusum Priyadarshini Epa and his daughter Chandula Rambukwella were also arrested yesterday and later remanded for failing to meet bail conditions.

Colombo Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali had ordered their release on Rs. 50,000 cash bail each and three sureties of Rs. 5 million per person. However, they were remanded after being unable to fulfill those requirements. (Newswire)
