King Charles has disclosed he paid £12.9m in tax for 2024-2025 – becoming the first monarch to reveal their tax bill.

The level of tax paid by the King puts him in the top 100 of UK taxpayers.

The Prince of Wales declared he paid £7.76m tax over the same period, the figures in the annual royal report and accounts show.

It has also been revealed the King and Queen Camilla will continue to live in Clarence House and not move into Buckingham Palace.

The accounts show the main source of annual public funding for the Royal Household, the Sovereign Grant, is rising to just under £100m for the year 2027-28.

The accounts also show the King paid £11.7m in tax for 2023-24, while Prince William paid £8.34m for the same period.

The publication of how much tax the King and Prince William voluntarily pay was a personal decision made by both men, according to their offices.

Buckingham Palace described the move as increasing transparency and aimed to “encourage wider understanding of our accountability.”

Since the King became monarch in 2022 and William the Prince of Wales, the combined tax bill of father and son paid to HM Revenue and Customs has been more than £50m.

The new figures do not give any detailed breakdown of how the tax has been calculated.

The monarch paid the highest rate of tax.

The King receives an annual income from his Duchy of Lancaster estate set up to give the monarch an independent source of money for official and private expenditure.

It is a portfolio of land, investments and properties. It provides the King with an annual income which in 2025-26 was £25.2m.

Other sources of income, liable for tax, include the King’s own investments and savings alongside money generated by his private estates, Balmoral and Sandringham.

Initially, Prince William did not release his tax payments when he became heir to the throne – but in line with his father, he has now made his payment of income and capital gains tax public.

Prince William receives an income from the Duchy of Cornwall – a billion-pound 130,000 acre hereditary estate which also includes the Oval cricket ground in London – which funds official duties, his office and private family life.

“Prince William pays income tax at the highest rate on any net surplus after those costs have been met. Those costs are independently audited to ensure that any deductions are appropriate,” said the prince’s private secretary Ian Patrick.

“The prince recognises the interest in these arrangements and the importance of appropriate transparency.”

The tax payable for 2025-2026 is still being audited and will be made public next year.

The income or any detail on private investments for both the King and Prince William has not been disclosed. (BBC)

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, presented his Letter of Credence to His Majesty King Charles III at a ceremonial event held at Buckingham Palace this week (28).

High Commissioner Senadheera, accompanied by his spouse and diplomatic officers, was escorted by Assistant Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, Eleanor Mackewn, to the Palace in the traditional horse-drawn carriages of the Royal Mews, in keeping with the distinguished protocol accorded to new Heads of Mission.

During his audience with His Majesty the King, High Commissioner Senadheera conveyed the warmest felicitations of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, alongside best wishes for his good health and well-being. The discussion focused on deepening and intensifying the longstanding political, economic and cultural relations between Sri Lanka and the UK, and also with the Commonwealth.

King Charles has met the world’s oldest person – who told him she remembers his investiture as Prince of Wales more than 50 years ago – when “all the girls were in love with him”.

Britain’s Ethel Caterham became the world’s oldest person aged 116 in April after the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas.

She celebrated her birthday quietly with family in August but said she would mark the occasion properly if King Charles were to visit.

He duly obliged and paid her a visit at her care home in Lightwater, Surrey, on Thursday, just after saying goodbye to US President Donald Trump.

Speaking to him in her armchair, she said: “I remember when your mother crowned you in Caernarfon Castle. And all the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you.”

The King, 76, raised his eyebrows, as one of Mrs Caterham’s granddaughters, Kate Henderson, interjected, saying: “You were saying that the other day, weren’t you? You said ‘Prince Charles was so handsome. All the girls were in love with him’. A true prince – and now the King.”

He quipped in response: “Yes, well, all that’s left of him anyway.”

Mrs Caterham has received 17 birthday cards from the King, and his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, since she turned 100.

In 2023, she featured on the Royal Family’s official Instagram page, where she was filmed receiving her 114th birthday card from the King.

When she broke the record for world’s oldest person earlier this year, she received a signed letter of congratulations from His Majesty.

Last-surviving subject of Edward VII

Mrs Caterham was born on 21 August 1909 in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, the second youngest of eight siblings.

She is the last-surviving subject of Edward VII, who died the following May.

Mrs Caterham left for India to work as an au pair for a military family at the age of 18, returning three years later.

She then met her husband Norman, who was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, at a dinner party in 1931.

They moved from their home in Salisbury to Gibraltar and Hong Kong, where he was stationed, and she set up a nursery school, and they raised two daughters – both of whom died before her.

Norman died in 1976, while one of her sisters, Gladys, lived to be 104.

Mrs Caterham drove until she was 97, played bridge well past the age of 100, and survived coronavirus in 2020 at the age of 110. (Sky News)

Britain’s King Charles III has extended his wishes to Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his election as Sri Lanka’s President, wishing him every possible success in guiding Sri Lanka at this important time.

King Charles also expressed hope to see the already close relationship between England and Sri Lanka deepen further under the new presidency.

“As C.O.P.29 approaches, I hope that our countries can work together as partners and as members of the modern Commonwealth, to protect our oceans, conserve biodiversity, and tackle climate risks,” he said.

King Charles’ message was conveyed in a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, which was handed over to the latter by the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Andrew Patrick. (Newswire)
