A three‑wheeler driver was reportedly killed this morning when his vehicle collided head‑on with a bus near Gothatuwa town on the Kolonnawa road.

According to reports, the crash occurred at around 9.10 am. The driver succumbed to injuries at the scene. 

Two passengers seated in the back of the three‑wheeler were also reportedly injured and were rushed to hospital for treatment. (Newswire/ Image – Accident1st)

The 12‑storey Kolonnawa Housing Complex, comprising 624 housing units, has been completed, the Ministry of Urban Development has announced.

The housing complex has been built with financial assistance from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) at a cost of Rs. 5,784 million.

According to the Ministry of Urban Development, all arrangements have been finalized to vest the project with the public. 

Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Eranga Gunasekara, visited the site this week to inspect the completed facilities. (Newswire)

The government has unveiled a major flood‑mitigation project in Kolonnawa, pledging more than Rs. 10 billion to deliver a permanent solution to the recurring flood problems faced by residents.

Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara said the project, launched today, is expected to be completed by 2029. 

It will focus on widening and developing key canal networks including Dahamwela, Passanna, Selalihini Mawatha, and Dandutota, while renovating 50 small bridges and culverts.

In addition, seven water retention tanks will be constructed, along with two new pumping stations. 

The project also includes the development of a walking path and a public park, aimed at improving both flood resilience and community facilities.

The initiative represents a long‑term commitment to safeguarding Kolonnawa residents from flood risks while enhancing urban infrastructure. (Newswire)

The Mayor of Colombo, Vraîe Cally Balthazaar, says the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has extended its relief work to Kolonnawa.

Vraîe Cally Balthazaar said that as the areas most affected by Ditwah in Colombo city are nearing normalcy, the CMC team continues working in Kolonnawa too.

“The devastation in our neighbouring city is vast, affecting 42 of the 46 GN divisions. Today is Day 5 for us. Our teams, machinery, our council members, everyone has been doing their part to help in the clean-up operation,” she said in a statement.

Vraîe Cally Balthazaar further said that it is likely that the CMC will be supporting them for many more weeks to come, along with the other local government councils from the Colombo district.

The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to suspend the party membership of Kolonnawa Urban Council member Susil Kumara.

Issuing a statement, the SJB said the decision has been taken after Susil Kumara failed to help the party secure the posts of Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the local council.

The National People’s Power (NPP) has established power in the Kolonnawa Urban Council during elections held today.

It is reported that a tense situation had arisen when the council convened to elect the Chairman this morning.

Following the 2025 Local Government Elections, the NPP had secured 09 seats and the opposition had secured 10 seats.

However, due to the tense situation, the 09 opposition MPs had left the chamber, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) Susil Kumara, who received the highest number of preferential votes, remained in the House and expressed support for the NPP. 

Accordingly, the NPP’s Dhammika Wijayamuni was elected as the Chairman of the Kolonnawa  Urban Council after securing 10 votes in the secret ballot held today, and Saman Seneviratne was appointed as the Vice Chairman.

Meanwhile, the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) established control of the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council in Kurunegala and the Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha in Ratnapura. 

The SJB, which won a majority of seats in the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council in the local government elections, secured a majority of votes in the election held today to take control of the local council. 

As such, the SJB candidate Gamini Karunaratne was elected Mayor of the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council. 

The SJB also secured a majority of votes to establish power in the Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha in Ratnapura during elections held today.
